Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • State criminal background check and Federal background check, if applicable, as required for regulated areas.
  • Ability to accurately utilize applicable computer software and equipment for access processing and follow downtime procedures.
  • Knowledge of procedures for reporting and documenting unsafe or hazardous conditions, incidents, and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.
  • Ability to maintain considerable attention to detail, stay organized, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to memorize considerable information and reference information not retained from written sources or from appropriate personnel.
  • Understanding of medical insurance requirements for payment and basic knowledge of covered services.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to understand written and verbal communication.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to perform frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
  • Visual acuity within the normal range.
  • Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
  • Reading and comprehension ability.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain demographic, billing, and insurance information from patients, family members, or legal guardians; enter information into registration and billing systems for service and claim processing; and scan insurance cards and photo identification.
  • Provide patients with information concerning insurance, payment of bills, and hospital procedures.
  • Complete managed care responsibilities related to obtaining pre-certification and authorizations, as needed.
  • Prepare WVU Medicine standard consent forms, notices of privacy practices, and other registration paperwork; present documents for signatures; and obtain electronic signatures for consent to treat and patient financial obligations.
  • Collect deposits, co-payments, deductibles, and patient liability payments when applicable; provide receipts; and document payments in registration and billing systems.
  • Prepare patient identification armbands.
  • Balance daily receipts and the cash drawer for patient payments, as needed.
  • Follow up on accounts identified by system flags, including courtesy dismissals, comments, and red stickers.
  • Initiate various screenings, obtain pertinent coverage information, and complete appropriate paperwork, as needed.
  • Perform medical necessity checks and complete Advanced Beneficiary Notices, as needed.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel patients in accordance with hospital workflows.
  • Check order completeness and validate orders against scheduled services.
  • Greet and escort patients to exam rooms; prepare patients for physician visits by obtaining initial information and vital signs.
  • Assist with or perform immunizations, medication refills, and electrocardiograms.

  • National Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant.
