Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist training program.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist is preferred.
  • Recent graduates may be trained; two years of experience or ambulatory surgery center experience is preferred.
  • Successfully complete Basic Life Support certification within six months of hire.
  • Demonstrate appropriate sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Perform scrub technologist functions according to Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Recommended Practices and Center policies and procedures.
  • Manage the operative field during surgical procedures while maintaining the sterile field.
  • Disinfect, clean, and prepare surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization.
  • Operate instrument-processing equipment, including an ultrasonic cleaner, washer-disinfector, Steris equipment, and an autoclave, using appropriate settings.
  • Prioritize and organize work with attention to detail.
  • Work effectively in stressful situations and with minimal supervision.
  • Work within a team environment and communicate effectively with health care professionals and personnel.
  • Have prior knowledge of surgical instrumentation and perioperative equipment.
  • Meet the physical demands of lifting or transferring patients in excess of 100 pounds, standing and walking for prolonged periods, and performing activities such as pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Have good visual and hearing acuity and manual dexterity to operate equipment and handle instrumentation.
  • Maintain required registration and certification.

Responsibilities
  • Set up operative fields by arranging instrumentation, equipment, and supplies on the Mayo stand and back tables according to the assigned case, Center policy, and the surgeon’s preference card.
  • Prepare for the next day’s scheduled procedures by pulling cases, using surgeon preference cards to verify supplies, instruments, and equipment, labeling cases, and accurately preparing the needs list.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other surgical team members.
  • Handle specimens according to Center policies and procedures.
  • Properly handle and store delicate instrumentation used during assigned cases.
  • Prepare clean and contaminated instruments and supplies for transport to Decontam for processing and sterilization.
  • Assist with disinfecting, cleaning, and preparing instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization when necessary.
  • Assist with suite maintenance, including case preparation, room turnover, and terminal cleaning.
  • Assist with inventory control and stocking supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Center and patient information.
  • Attend applicable training, development workshops, and professional training seminars, and share relevant information with staff.
  • Assist in orienting new personnel and act as a resource person to other staff members.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement Program activities, including identifying cost-reduction and efficiency opportunities.
  • Work to achieve and maintain the Center’s regulatory certification and accreditation.
  • Maintain dress and appearance according to the Center dress code.
  • Resolve conflicts through appropriate communication.
  • Accept constructive criticism and provide suggestions professionally.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of experience or ambulatory surgery center experience.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist.
