April 8, 2026 | 12:12 am Updated April 8, 2026 | 12:47 am Area students will get a hands-on look at potential careers - from welding to veterinary care - during an upcoming event designed to spark interest in high-demand fields. Owensboro Community & Technical College Workforce Solutions is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club to host the second annual Hands-On Horizons event on April 15 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on OCTC's downtown campus at 1501 Frederica Street. The event is expected to bring nearly 70 students from Boys & Girls Club locations in Daviess, Butler, Henderson, and Ohio counties for an interactive introduction to career pathways and technical training opportunities available through OCTC. Hands-On Horizons is designed to expose students to high-demand, hands-on careers through demonstrations and activities led by OCTC faculty and staff. Participating programs include veterinary technology, healthcare, commercial driver's license (CDL), I-TEC, carpentry, welding, and other workforce-focused fields. "Our goal is to help students see what's possible and begin imagining themselves in careers they may not have considered," said Sheri Plain, vice president of Workforce Solutions. "By giving them hands-on experiences and real conversations with instructors, we hope to spark curiosity and confidence at an early age." Officials said the partnership reflects OCTC's continued focus on community engagement and workforce development, particularly by introducing students to career options aligned with regional workforce needs. "Hands-On Horizons represents the power of partnership in action," said Ryan Bibb, chief operating officer of the Boys & Girls Club. "By working alongside Owensboro Community & Technical College, we are giving our teen members meaningful, hands-on exposure to career pathways and real-world skills that prepare them for life after high school." Workforce Solutions Director Becky Barnhart said the event provides an opportunity for students to explore careers in a supportive setting while connecting with industry professionals. "Hands-On Horizons gives students a chance to explore careers in a fun environment while connecting them with people who want to see them succeed," Barnhart said. The event marks the second year of the program, which organizers say continues to grow as a collaborative effort to introduce students to in-demand career fields. Local ROSLYN teen launches robotics and drone program for underserved students at Boys & Girls Club. Distributed by EIN Presswire Ethan David, of Roslyn High School, launched a robotics program for students at the Boys & Girls Club, expanding access to STEM education for underserved youth ROSLYN, NY, UNITED STATES, March 25, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ - Ethan David, a junior at Roslyn High School (RHS), recently completed a pilot robotics and drone program for students at the Boys & Girls Club in Glen Cove, expanding access to hands-on STEM education for underserved youth. Ethan serves as Captain of the Roslyn High School Robotics Club, where he helps lead team planning, design strategy, coding support, CAD modeling, and mentorship for younger members. The club competes in regional and national competitions and continues to grow despite limited resources. Ethan also competes nationally as a member of Coast-to-Coast Robotics (C2C), an independent competitive robotics organization. The C2C team recently qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis after a strong showing at the Southern New York V5 State Championship, where Team A placed 1st and Team D placed 6th. The team also earned 1st and 3rd place at a Vaughn College competition. While competition rules prevent him from competing in VEX events with both teams, Ethan remains actively involved in mentoring and guiding Roslyn's robotics team as captain. Ethan believes access to hands-on STEM education should not depend on zip code. Through his exposure to advanced robotics programs, aviation training, and engineering mentorship, he saw how transformative early technical experience can be. He wanted to create similar opportunities for students who might not otherwise have access to robotics kits, drones, or engineering guidance. To expand that impact, Ethan founded SkyBridge STEM, a nonprofit initiative focused on introducing robotics, drones, coding, and engineering fundamentals to underserved students through structured, project-based workshops. The organization partners with local schools and community programs to help bridge the opportunity gap in STEM education. Through SkyBridge STEM, Ethan launched a pilot robotics and drone curriculum at the Boys & Girls Club in Glen Cove, where students were introduced to: - Basic engineering principles - Robotics assembly and programming - Drone flight fundamentals - FAA safety awareness - Team-based problem solving - Presentation skills "I've been fortunate to have access to robotics and aviation programs that changed how I see my future," Ethan said. "I wanted to help create that same spark for other students. Engineering isn't just about building machines. It's about solving problems and believing you can build something that matters." "We're excited to have the SkyBridge STEM team join our after-school program. Providing students with hands-on exposure to robotics and technology is incredibly valuable, and we're grateful for the opportunity to bring this experience to our kids," says Milky Asip, Youth Program Director of the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club at Lincoln House. Ethan plans to expand SkyBridge STEM to additional partner organizations and introduce more advanced modules, including structured drone flight training and competitive robotics preparation. He is also helping spearhead the launch of a formal Drone & Aviation Technologies class at Roslyn High School next semester, making it one of the only Long Island public high schools currently offering a dedicated drone curriculum. Slone '11, one of two recipients at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) of a 2025 Faculty and Staff Award from the Southern Conference. Slone has been commended for "over 13 years of dedicated service" in "key roles, including Echo Company TAC Officer, Head Coach of the Rock Climbing Team, and Director of both indoor and outdoor training facilities." A native of Roanoke, Slone was a varsity soccer player at Ferrum College and majored in Recreation Leadership. He also participated in Alpha Phi Omega service organization and Ferrum Outdoors. "The Recreation Leadership major gave me hands-on experience building programs from start to finish and leading people across diverse skill levels, preparing me to lead effectively in my professional career," said Slone. He earned an M.B.A. at Salem University in West Virginia in 2016 and a Certificate in Organizational Leadership, Business Administration, Management and Operations from Harvard University in 2023. Program Coordinator Dr. Dan Caston said, "Isaac stood out in the Recreation Leadership major for his ability to lead with purpose, collaborate effectively, and apply classroom learning to real-world recreation challenges - skills that have translated seamlessly into professional success and a meaningful life." Slone served as a community engagement coordinator and assistant site director at Boys and Girls Clubs of America in Roanoke before he began work at VMI. "These outstanding faculty and staff members exemplify the excellence and commitment that define the Southern Conference," said SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross in the award press release. "Their dedication to mentorship, teaching, leadership and service, their contributions to their institutions, and their positive impact on students and communities make them truly deserving of this recognition. We are proud to celebrate each of these dedicated individuals who go above and beyond in their roles and help make each SoCon campus a special and exceptional place." VMI recognized the value of Slone's "broad experience" that strengthened his perspective on leadership. When he received the staff award, Slone said, "This recognition truly reflects the strength of the team I serve on here at VMI. Our focus is on supporting cadets who face unique academic, military, and athletic demands, and our successes are the result of shared commitment and hard work." A VMI social media post in 2021 describes in detail Slone's "unique, challenging, and arguably fun role on post: overseeing VMI's leadership, challenge, and obstacle courses. An avid rock climber, Slone had a career in backpacking and rock climbing before coming to post. His role is a perfect fit for him, combining his passions, degrees, and love of VMI." Slone said in that post, "Being able to work with cadets and put them in extremely challenging situations, such as the high ropes course, and really see them stretch and grow, that is a huge payoff." Keydets Athletics honored Major Slone and Col. Jeffrey Smith as members of the All-Southern Conference Faculty and Staff Team for the 2025-26 academic year on January 17 at a VMI home basketball game against The Citadel.
