Inova named #3 Top Large Health System in the nation. Inova Alexandria ranks #20 in Large Community Hospital category and earns prestigious Everest Award. May 26, 2026 3:16 p.m. Inova Alexandria Hospital Inova has been named the #3 Top Large Health System in the United States in the 2026 15 Top Health Systems study by Modern Healthcare based on an objective quantitative analysis conducted by Premier, Inc., a national leader in healthcare transformation and performance improvement. The Inova Health System includes five acute care hospitals across Northern Virginia including Inova Alexandria Hospital, located at 4320 Seminary Road. Inova Alexandria's new 1.1 million square foot medical campus is under construction; it will include a 192-bed inpatient facility with private rooms and a larger emergency department as well as a cancer research center and a Level II trauma center. This ranking places Inova as one of the highest-performing health systems in the nation. The study evaluates health system performance across clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experience to identify organizations delivering consistently high-quality care. In addition to the system-level recognition, two Inova hospitals were also ranked among the country's top-performing hospitals in the 2026 100 Top Hospitals study: * Inova Fair Oaks Hospital ranked #5 in the Medium Community Hospital category * Inova Alexandria Hospital ranked #20 in the Large Community Hospital category * Inova Alexandria Hospital also earned the prestigious Everest Award, which honors hospitals that set national benchmarks for both the fastest rate of improvement and the highest current-year performance on the 100 Top Hospitals balanced scorecard. The rankings reflect Inova's continued focus on delivering safe and high-quality care across the region. "Being recognized as the #3 large health system in the country, while also seeing two of our hospitals earn national distinction, reflects the extraordinary commitment of 26,000 Inova Team Members to delivering exceptional care for the patients and communities we serve," said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO of Inova. "We set a vision in 2018 to be among the leading health systems in the nation, and I'm proud that this recognition - along with many others - reflects how Inova is meeting the moment." The recognition comes amid continued national honors for Inova, including being named the 2025 Press Ganey HX Health System of the Year. The 15 Top Health Systems study evaluates performance using a balanced scorecard of publicly reported measures that include mortality, complications, healthcare-associated infections, patient experience, readmissions, and Medicare spend per beneficiary. Notably, the methodology also incorporates length of stay, an increasingly important measure of both operational efficiency and coordinated patient care. "Improving length of stay requires impeccable coordination across clinical teams, care management, operations, and support services," said Chapy Venkatesan, MD, Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Inova. "Our teams have worked incredibly hard to strengthen patient flow, communication and patient engagement, discharge planning, and care coordination in ways that improve both the patient experience and clinical outcomes. It's meaningful to see those efforts reflected in this recognition." Across all measured indicators, the nation's top-performing health systems demonstrated significantly stronger outcomes than peer organizations, including: * Lower inpatient mortality rates * Fewer healthcare-associated infections * Shorter average lengths of stay * Lower total episode-of-care costs and improved operational efficiency For the 2026 analysis, Premier researchers evaluated 336 health systems and 2,716 hospitals nationwide using publicly available data. "Achieving Premier's 15 Top Health Systems(R) designation is a meaningful accomplishment that reflects a health system's commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care," said David Zito, President of Performance Services at Premier. "This recognition highlights Inova's focus on improving outcomes, strengthening operations and advancing the overall patient experience." The 100 Top Hospitals study separately evaluated 2,540 short-term, acute care hospitals across the United States.
Alexandria's Twig volunteers give $2 million gift to support new Inova hospital at Landmark. 90-year legacy of local philanthropy continues with major investment in Alexandria's future healthcare. 2 minutes read Press play to listen to this content ALEXANDRIA, VA - For more than nine decades, a group of dedicated Alexandria volunteers has quietly helped shape the future of local healthcare. Now, they're making one of their most significant contributions yet. The Junior Auxiliary of Inova Alexandria Hospital - better known as The Twig - has made a $2 million gift to support the new Inova Alexandria Hospital currently under construction at the former Landmark Mall site. The gift will help fund programs and facilities in Inova's eastern region and is part of the health system's broader Do. More. Together. campaign, aimed at expanding access to care and advancing medical services across Northern Virginia. In recognition of the contribution, the new hospital's conference center will be named in honor of The Twig. A legacy rooted in Alexandria. Founded in 1933, The Twig has raised more than $7 million over the years to support patient care, medical equipment, and hospital improvements at Inova Alexandria. The all-volunteer organization is a familiar presence in the community, known for operating its popular thrift shop, organizing the annual Historic Alexandria Homes Tour, and hosting other local fundraisers - all to support the hospital and promote community health. "This gift represents both our history and our future," said Twig President Lori Ring. "Twig members have long believed a strong hospital is essential to a strong community. As Inova Alexandria Hospital prepares to move into its new home, we are proud to continue our tradition of supporting exceptional care for our neighbors." A new chapter for healthcare in Alexandria. The modern campus is designed to expand access to advanced medical technology, specialty services, and innovative care - while maintaining the hospital's longstanding commitment to compassionate, community-centered treatment. "This extraordinary commitment from The Twig reflects the deep partnership between our hospital and the Alexandria community," said Dr. Rina Bansal, President of Inova Alexandria Hospital. "For decades, Twig members have given their time, their energy and their resources to support patient care. Their newest gift will help ensure that the next generation of patients benefits from world-class facilities and services right here in Alexandria." Community-powered care. The Twig's latest gift will play a key role in Inova's Eastern Region Development Plan, helping enhance healthcare services across Alexandria and southern Fairfax County. As construction continues at Landmark, the project represents more than just a new building - it's a reflection of decades of community investment. And thanks to The Twig, that tradition of giving is as strong as ever.
