Requirements
  • An associate's degree in optics, electro-optics, physics, or mechanical technology and three years of relevant experience are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to manipulate heavy mechanisms and glass substrates is required.
  • Willingness to interact with fellow technicians, research scientists, students, and vendors with a friendly and professional attitude is required.
Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain equipment to shape, grind, and polish optical components up to 350 millimeters in diameter.
  • Evaluate optical drawings to manufacture parts to required specifications.
  • Assist in the final testing of parts.
  • Operate continuous polishers.
  • Operate grinding machines.
  • Operate double-sided grinding and polishing machines for optics up to four inches in diameter.
  • Use micrometers, calipers, and interferometers.
  • Maintain and clean equipment.
  • Interpret optical drawings to manufacture parts to specifications.
  • Organize, inventory, and order spare supplies for the shop.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience working with alignment of laser systems.
  • Previous experience with grinding and polishing equipment.
  • Good mechanical or electrical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to document work and follow procedures.
