Requirements
  • A college degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or a similar field is required.
  • Certification by a recognized HACCP training provider is required.
  • PCQI certification is required.
  • Knowledge of HACCP and HARPC and experience implementing Food Safety Plans are required.
  • Working knowledge of regulations and guidelines imposed on meat and poultry operations by federal and state agencies and authorities, including Title 9 and Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Laboratory Practices, and other food safety rules is required.
  • The ability to communicate persuasively and passionately about the need for food safety and quality is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with company personnel and regulatory officials is required.
  • Excellent organization and decision-making skills and the ability to manage multiple projects are required.
  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is required.
  • The role requires repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; sedentary work involving prolonged stationary sitting; and visual perception, including peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee all quality and food safety programs, including implementation of food safety and continuous improvement initiatives, required verifications, staff training, and documentation.
  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of the SQF system.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety programs, including HACCP and Food Safety Plans.
  • Provide facility food safety and quality leadership to the FS/QA department and develop the skill sets of QA salaried and hourly personnel.
  • Enhance QA and sanitation programs throughout the facility by communicating with management, operations, and sanitation teams about food safety programs and improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain and develop food safety and quality programs and pursue continuous improvement of product quality.
  • Interact directly with regulatory inspectors from the USDA, FDA, and state agencies.
  • Lead or assist with regulatory, customer, internal, and third-party audits.
  • Provide and promote a safe work environment throughout the facility.
  • Maintain communication and foster teamwork among personnel, departments, and shifts while promoting a food safety culture.
  • Develop, review, and revise SOPs and testing standards as necessary.
  • Ensure company policies and procedures are fairly administered within the department.
  • Assist with pre-operational inspections, environmental and microbial sampling, internal audits, complaint investigations, and direct observations.
  • Oversee onsite laboratory activities and quality testing and serve as the liaison for outside laboratory testing.
  • Review, analyze, interpret, approve, and report laboratory results according to SOPs and applicable testing protocols.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately.
  • Review all records, including CCPs, for accuracy and completeness and sign off in a timely manner.
  • Stop processing and packaging activities that may cause a food safety concern.
  • Train all departments in Food Safety and Quality Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform other duties requested by the Director of Food Safety and Quality or Vice President of Technical Services.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior leadership experience in a food manufacturing facility is preferred.
  • Quality control laboratory experience with an understanding of analytical, microbiological, and environmental testing and method execution is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5–7 years working in a food manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Global Food Safety Initiative training, such as SQF or BRC, is preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communication is preferred.
