Requirements
- Must be 19 years or older.
- Must hold a valid Basic First Aid Certificate (Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent), or be willing to complete the course before hiring.
- Must be able to obtain RCMP Reliability Clearance.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
- Must meet RCMP-V4 visual standards; eyeglasses are permitted.
- Must be able to use both hands, occasionally manipulate or lift up to 20 kilograms, bend at the waist, and climb stairs without restrictions or assistance devices.
- Must remain in control under stressful conditions and work independently.
- Must be discreet and work effectively with other people.
- Must be willing to undergo detention guard training as required, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training and semi-annual refresher training.
Responsibilities
- Observe and check prisoners frequently and irregularly, including using closed-circuit television.
- Assist RCMP members with prisoner searches under direction.
- Organize meals, record prisoner activity, and maintain a prisoner activity logbook.
- Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of cells when vacated or arrange janitorial assistance.
- Search cells before occupation and when cells are vacated, and report any damage.
- Maintain cellblock security by ensuring cell doors are always locked.
- Ensure all personal effects removed from prisoners are properly secured.
- Monitor fire safety and remain fully conversant with fire orders.
- Handle and dispense laundry items.
- Dispense approved prescription medications to persons in custody under supervision.
- Perform other duties required by the detachment.
