Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (Social Sciences, Political Science, Computer Science, Criminology, Criminal Justice etc.) or equivalent experience required; and 1-2 years’ experience conducting research and working with datasets in a professional or academic setting.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or Education and/or experience which is equivalent to the first two items, with at least one year of experience as described in the first item.
  • Current office employees must have served at least 1 year in their current unit/bureau/department and be in good standing; must meet the minimum and additional qualifications of the position; and must have authorization to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Perform data analysis to understand Office practice, guide Office policy, and ensure Office policies are supported by evidence-based practices. Projects will include the development of new prosecutorial strategies, diversion programs, or other Office practices.
  • Lead development of policy fact sheets, data briefs, memos, articles, testimony and other evidence-based messaging and products for internal dissemination in support of project or initiative goals.
  • Create internal dashboards to monitor and track progress towards key Office performance indicators in support of the Office’s strategic goals.
  • Respond to internal and external requests for data and statistics by querying the Office’s internal datasets in SQL Server and/Snowflake.
  • Collaborate with IT on infrastructure, tools, and policies.
  • Tread new ground in terms of analytical tools, methods, and techniques, including identifying new use cases, piloting concepts, and implementing methods for using data to achieve Office goals.
  • Conduct background policy research such as literature reviews or national best practices research and identify promising strategies for Office-wide consideration. Integrate knowledge into internal- and public-facing products.
  • Educate staff throughout the Office on the power of data-driven work and data-driven management.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders on data and research-related projects.
  • Expand transparency and accountability efforts with communities served by the Office.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working in criminal justice or public policy organizations in a data-driven role.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft SQL, Snowflake, or other Relational Database Management Systems in a professional or academic setting.
  • Work experience or classwork in quantitative and/or qualitative methodology.
  • Proficiency with statistical software such as R or SAS, Python, or Geographic Information System in a professional or academic setting.
  • Experience using data visualization software such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Interest in public policy and a desire to tackle complex issues, including public safety, justice, and equity.
  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills as well as familiarity with research methods and statistical analyses.
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience working in teams and collaborating on projects.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be extremely detail-oriented, self-motivated, highly organized, resourceful, and reliable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Manhattan District Attorney Announces Organized Retail Theft-Related Indictments

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicted a business and two individuals as part of an effort to fight organized retail theft.District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the indictment of Bibi Rehana Khan, 54, Aaron Khan, 40, and Rehana’s Cosmetics, alleging that they possessed more than $1 million in stolen goods and served as a retail theft fencing operation, the District Attorney’s office said in a Thursday (May 9) press release. The defendants were charged with criminal possession of stolen property.“We must use every tool in our toolbox to address the root causes of retail theft, and a critical piece of that is upstream, proactive investigations into those who stand to profit,” Bragg said in the release.Rehana’s Cosmetics operated online and from a location in Manhattan, according to the release. When search warrants were executed in January, the District Attorney’s office recovered cosmetics, clothing, household items, toys and other items.The indictment followed a long-term investigation that was aided by Macy’s, Ulta Beauty, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid, according to the release.“Proactive fencing investigations are one of several strategies the office is using to combat retail theft,” the release said. “In 2022, the office created the Manhattan Small Business Alliance to reduce shoplifting and commercial robberies in partnership with small business leaders in every neighborhood of Manhattan.”Retailers lost $112.1 billion to shrink in 2022, up from $93.9 billion the previous year, the National Retail Federation (NRF) said in September.They’ve also seen a rise in violence associated with organized retail crime (ORC), with 67% of retailers reporting an increase in violence and aggression from ORC perpetrators compared to the previous year, NRF said.“Retailers are seeing unprecedented levels of theft coupled with rampant crime in their stores, and the situation is only becoming more dire,” David Johnston, vice president for asset protection and retail operations at NRF, said at the time in a press release.One organized crime ring reportedly stole as much as $8 million in cosmetics over the course of a decade, reselling those items on Amazon.For all PYMNTS retail coverage, subscribe to the daily Retail Newsletter
