Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills, including entering data, sending and receiving email, and accurately typing reports, are required.
  • A valid Florida driver's license is required.
  • The ability to possess or obtain basic First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification within 12 months is required.
  • The ability to possess or obtain a Class D security officer license within 12 months is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively verbally is required.
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule with irregular hours is required.
  • A criminal and motor vehicle background check is required.
  • The ability to perform public safety responsibilities in a professional and caring manner is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including completing a variety of reports, is required.
  • The ability to prioritize when dealing with multiple high-priority situations is required.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality on records, reports, incidents investigated by the Office of Public Safety, and other information accessible to the Office of Public Safety is required.
  • Excellent observational skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including courtesy, listening, and tactful interaction with varied personalities, are required.
  • The employee must be able to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods, run when necessary, climb up to five flights of stairs quickly without rest, lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds without assistance, and work in adverse weather conditions.
  • The employee must be able to speak and hear sufficiently to communicate clearly by landline telephone, cell phone, two-way radio, and in person.
  • Clear vision in a variety of light settings is required.
  • Manual dexterity to check locks, doors, and windows is required.
  • The ability to think clearly and quickly under potentially stressful and dangerous circumstances is required.
  • The ability to maintain composure and function in emergency or confrontational situations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Patrol college buildings, grounds, and parking lots, including all college properties and the Sarasota Art Museum.
  • Regularly check doors, windows, and gates to determine whether they are secure.
  • Enforce campus parking rules and regulations and issue parking citations when necessary.
  • Record information about property damage, unusual occurrences, and machinery or equipment malfunctions for supervisory staff and college administrators.
  • Prepare necessary reports in a timely manner.
  • Warn violators of rule infractions and stop activity that is illegal, unsafe, or violates campus rules or policies; document violations through incident reports.
  • Watch for and report safety hazards, leaking water pipes, lights left on, unlocked doors, and other irregularities through incident reports.
  • Respond to and handle emergency situations, providing assistance as necessary, including first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Provide shift coverage when needed.
