Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution in criminal justice, criminology, corrections, counseling, human services development, law, law enforcement, police science, pre-law, public administration, rehabilitative studies, social work, psychology, or sociology, plus one year of graduate study in one of those related fields, one year of full-time casework or counseling experience, or other documented education or experience demonstrating qualification as a supervision officer.
  • The applicant cannot be dually employed as a peace officer or work as a reserve or volunteer peace officer.
  • The applicant cannot be currently on community supervision or parole or serving a sentence for a criminal offense.
  • The applicant must have a valid driver's license and liability insurance coverage meeting at least state minimum standards.
  • The applicant must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • The applicant must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • The applicant must be able to assess potentially dangerous situations in office and field settings, understand the continuum of force, and subdue or restrain a suspect when required.
  • The applicant must be able to lift light materials and equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform investigative and supervisory casework, post-sentence investigations, and supervision of assigned defendants.
  • Counsel defendants, assess risks and needs using screening instruments, prepare individualized supervision plans, make community resource referrals, and maintain contact with outside referral agencies.
  • Visit defendants at home, at work, in treatment facilities, or in jail as required by the supervision level or immediate need.
  • Maintain current and accurate case records for assigned defendants.
  • Keep the appropriate court informed of supervision violations, and prepare court records, reports, and documents and testify when requested.
  • Provide transportation to treatment facilities, intermediate sanction facilities, or other care units as required or directed by the Unit Supervisor.
  • Maintain payment records and secure payments according to court order, including making decisions about distribution of collected funds.
  • Provide supervision for officers, technicians, secretaries, and other assigned support staff.
  • Make day-to-day decisions regarding casework, sanctions, defendants' needs and referrals, and inpatient or outpatient treatment placement.
  • Maintain proficiency with a firearm if permitted to carry one and follow requirements regarding carrying a weapon.
  • Counsel defendants and provide habilitative training and programming for defendants and their families.
  • Make appropriate referrals, place defendants in inpatient or outpatient treatment, distribute collected funds, and administer and witness urine collection and testing for contraband substances.
  • Prepare direct supervision, indirect supervision, violation, and Community Justice Assistance Division case classification and case management reports and forms.
  • Testify in court regarding identification and specific case details when needed.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Court, supervisor, Director, or Assistant Director.
