Landsec closes in on £500m Metrocentre acquisition.

Landsec closes in on £500m Metrocentre acquisition. Camilla Rydzek 19 August 2026 Landsec is reportedly close to completing a deal worth approximately £500 million for Gateshead's Metrocentre, with the property giant potentially seeking shareholder funding for the acquisition, according to The Times. The proposed purchase would give Landsec control of one of the UK's largest shopping centres, following competition from Frasers Group and Hammerson. Earlier this year, the Metrocentre Partnership put the centre up for sale. The asset is owned by a group of investors that acquired it after Intu - a major corporate shopping centre operator and the centre's former owner - entered administration in 2020. Metrocentre performance and investment More than £60 million has been invested in upgrades at Metrocentre by the Metrocentre Partnership in recent years. This work included refurbishing The Crescent, a 10,000 sq ft retail destination intended to support local and independent brands. In March, Metrocentre said that footfall had exceeded 16 million since the pandemic for the first time, after rising 5.4% annually. It attributed the improvement to a Sovereign Centros-led investment programme that brought changes to the centre, introduced new brands and upgraded facilities for existing operators. The centre has continued to secure retailer investment during the sale process. In July, New Look opened its biggest concept store to date at Metrocentre, taking up 11,000 sq ft in the Red Mall. The store includes expanded womenswear and accessories ranges, as well as digital browsing and services for Click & Collect, order-in-store and self-service returns. Stradivarius and Hollister have also joined the fashion offer over the past year, while Bershka and Lefties have been signed for future openings. Wider development plans The shopping centre forms part of a 52-acre brownfield development area planned to become Metro Riverside, a 4,500-home neighbourhood being advanced through an agreement involving Metrocentre and Gateshead Council. Plans include homes, retail, a hotel, workspaces and leisure facilities. The proposed MetroGreen Area Action Plan included 990 homes around Metrocentre by 2030, with the wider district planned around a "20 minute destination" model. Landsec's acquisition would extend beyond ownership of the existing retail asset, bringing the group into a development area that includes future residential and commercial uses.

Landsec renews major social value investment

Home - news - Landsec renews major social value investment. Landsec renews major social value investment with Ahead Partnership. 03 Aug, 26 Landsec has renewed its partnership with Ahead Partnership, which will see the expansion of bespoke social value programmes in multiple locations across the UK, providing new career opportunities to more young people than ever before. Delivered through Ahead Partnership's bespoke model for improved social mobility, this latest collaboration will see hundreds more young people connecting with businesses and role models from key sectors and industries linked to retail and development. The partnership sits as part of Landsec Futures, a social mobility fund which seeks to boost equality within the real estate industry and deliver £200 million worth of social value by 2030. The collaboration between Ahead Partnership and Landsec, the UK's largest commercial property development and investment company, guarantees significant investment into their co-designed "Made In" challenges, which reached its 2026 finale last month. A series of employability and enterprise competitions, the programme gives young people the opportunity to learn about the diverse range of careers on offer to them in retail and design, and pitch the transformation of vacant retail units or outdoor spaces into vibrant community destinations to a panel of experts. As part of the programme's growth, the Made In challenge will launch at Liverpool ONE from 2027, bringing the initiative to young people in Liverpool for the first time and extending its impact beyond its existing locations, including Cardiff, Essex, Glasgow, Kent, Leeds and Portsmouth. Our partnership with Landsec is an exemplar of the type of social value we are committed to delivering: collaborating to provide meaningful, repeated engagement opportunities, hands-on learning experiences and access to business leaders, role models and mentors. At a time when there are more than a million young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training, these partnerships are vital to broaden access and opportunity for young people into good jobs across growing sectors. It is only through this kind of early intervention that we can stem the tide of rising youth unemployment. Andy Clarke, Partnerships Director at Ahead Partnership At Landsec, we recognise the importance of early engagement in securing a fairer, more diverse future workforce. The renewal of our successful partnership with Ahead Partnership will be a powerful driving force in the delivery of our bold social value ambitions. We are committed to improving equality across our sector, currently supporting over 30,000 people from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds towards long-term employment by 2030. Through our work with Ahead Partnership, we are able to identify and support young people who will benefit significantly from this type of engagement, and tailor these initiatives to them and for them.
