Requirements
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the current state of and trends in data linkage, data architecture, and digital technologies in science and health research and practice.
  • A PhD, MD, or equivalent level of training in a quantitative, computational, clinical, biological, or physical science discipline, with a high-level understanding of the data and software systems used and being developed in science and health.
  • Experience working with health-relevant or scientific data in a technical and/or strategic capacity.
  • Deep knowledge of the United Kingdom health data landscape, including key institutions, initiatives, and infrastructure, with experience managing relationships with senior stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and effectively represent organisational interests.
Responsibilities
  • Identify and develop funding opportunities in data linkage, data architecture, and digital technologies that support Wellcome’s Discovery strategy and maximise the impact of research and innovation.
  • Build an expert understanding of the health data landscape, particularly in the United Kingdom, to identify emerging opportunities, inform investment decisions, and shape strategic priorities.
  • Lead and deliver funding activities, including landscape reviews, funding calls, requests for proposals, contracts, and discretionary awards, while providing technical expertise throughout the process.
  • Develop strong partnerships with researchers, funders, industry, and other stakeholders; represent Wellcome externally; and foster collaboration to advance shared goals.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Discovery, Solutions, Equity, and Policy teams to align priorities, share expertise, and strengthen Wellcome’s portfolio of data and digital technology investments.
  • Provide leadership and oversight across key initiatives, support delivery through matrix management, ensure high-quality outputs, manage risks and budgets, and contribute to an inclusive and collaborative team culture.

Wellcome AI provides practical AI education and strategic advisory to leadership teams, helping them decide where AI should own work, when humans stay in the loop, and how to manage risk. Its offerings include in-person courses across Australia and virtual options worldwide, such as AI Essentials, AI for Your Business, and The Agentic Executive private coaching, plus AI Audits.
