Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • At least two years of experience in the human services field, such as mental health, substance abuse, homelessness, or domestic violence, is required.
  • The ability to build strong working relationships with clients and team members is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed is required.
  • An annual tuberculosis test is required.
  • The ability to sit or stand for long periods and lift items weighing 10–20 pounds is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide 24-hour awake coverage and supervise the shelter environment while serving as the lead person on shift and first point of contact for client needs and support.
  • Ensure the shelter functions safely, monitor visitor check-in, and manage front desk calls and inquiries.
  • Document client interactions and significant shelter events in the daily log.
  • Work with case managers to support and reinforce clients' service plans and communicate about client progress.
  • Complete shift exchanges with incoming and outgoing staff and report daily activities to maintain continuity.
  • Ensure Shelter House log documentation is complete and complies with agency best practices.
  • Evaluate and provide for clients' basic needs, including distributing household items, toiletries, and other supplies.
  • Maintain clients' dignity and confidentiality during service delivery.
  • Maintain knowledge of and administer emergency procedures, including building evacuation, health emergencies, and safety management.
  • Conduct assessments and intakes for families seeking one-night-only shelter after hours.
  • Assist with medication delivery and security.
  • Accept donations and support volunteer programs and events in the shelter.
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff training as directed.
  • Ensure compliance with agency policies and best practices.
  • Use Microsoft applications, including email, calendar, drive, and documents, for daily work.
  • Serve as emergency personnel and report to work as scheduled during inclement weather, highway congestion, and other circumstances.
  • Safely operate Shelter House vehicles to transport clients to various locations.
  • Demonstrate Shelter House's values of collaboration, accountability, respect, and empowerment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in human services or a related field is preferred.
  • One year of customer service experience is preferred.
  • Experience working in programs serving homeless families is preferred.
  • Experience working in a residential environment is preferred.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certification is preferred.
