Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to teach basic vocal and instrumental skills and adapt instruction for multiple age groups and abilities.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead small ensembles and prepare student performances.
  • Familiarity with basic music reading, rhythm instruction, and ear training.
  • Completion of KeepSAfe and other required training upon hire.
  • Availability Tuesday and Friday afternoons, weekends, and occasional weekends for performances.
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a faith-based nonprofit environment and respect and promote The Salvation Army's mission.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver weekly music classes for children from preschool through middle school, including vocal, basic instrumental, rhythm, and music theory instruction.
  • Create lesson plans and curriculum objectives tied to age groups and program goals.
  • Assess student progress and maintain records of attendance, skill development, and classroom behavior.
  • Prepare children for Star Search, recitals, holiday programs, community performances, and Corps events.
  • Coordinate with Corps Officers and coworkers regarding scheduling, space needs, and program promotion.
  • Supervise and train volunteer teaching assistants as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment and manage classroom behavior appropriately.
  • Inventory and care for musical instruments and classroom materials and request supplies or repairs through Corps Officers.
  • Communicate with parents or guardians about student progress, upcoming events, and materials needed.
  • Support fundraising and publicity efforts related to music programs.
  • Adhere to Salvation Army policies, including confidentiality, child protection, and required training.
  • Represent The Salvation Army at conferences and community meetings as requested by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • A college degree or certification in music education, music performance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience teaching music to children is preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish ability is preferred.
