Responsibilities
  • Develop goals, objectives, and programs for the pharmacy department aligned with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Implement decisions of pharmaceutical, therapeutic, and hospital committees.
  • Define and resolve medication distribution system issues and evaluate the need for expansion or revision.
  • Lead the development and implementation of medication delivery and drug therapy monitoring systems.
  • Provide leadership and direction to pharmacy staff and promote positive customer relations.
  • Establish and revise standards of care for pharmacy practices.
  • Plan, support, and lead quality improvement efforts for pharmacy services.
  • Facilitate working relationships with physicians, nursing staff, administrators, and other personnel.
  • Serve as a resource on pharmacy and organizational policies for staff, physicians, and patients.
  • Manage capital and operational budgets and explain significant budget variances.
  • Ensure patients receive accurate instructions on new prescriptions and refills.
  • Make recommendations and decisions regarding hiring, disciplining, and promoting subordinates.
  • Establish and assess internal controls within the unit and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensure employees are trained on internal controls and University policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and supervise the intravenous admixture program, including preparation and monitoring of chemotherapeutic and investigational intravenous therapies.
  • Ensure accurate preparation and delivery of injectable chemotherapy and other intravenous medications.
  • Determine dosage amounts and intravenous compatibilities, and review patient profiles and new orders to prevent drug interactions and contraindications.
  • Maintain appropriate drug records and inventory.
  • Provide current and accurate drug information to healthcare professionals and patients, including medication dosage requirements, indications, contraindications, pharmacology, side effects, adverse reactions, precautions, and formulary agents.
  • Manage the preparation and review of investigational drug products.
  • Oversee accurate investigational drug records, including ordering, receipt, inventory, and maintenance documentation.
  • Perform clinical medication order review and verify computerized physician order entry for investigational and standard-of-care medications.
  • Prepare, compound, manufacture, and dispense investigational drugs and materials.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of products before delivery to trial subjects.
  • Counsel patients on investigational medications and medications for use at home.
  • Train and supervise technical staff, residents, and interns in hospital, clinic, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other job-related duties assigned by the Director of Pharmacy Services or designee.
