Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a Master's degree in Engineering in lieu of the bachelor's degree.
  • Nuclear Engineer I requires 0–2 years of engineering experience.
  • Nuclear Engineer II requires 2–4 years of engineering experience, including at least 1 year of nuclear experience.
  • Understanding of basic engineering and testing theories and principles.
  • Understanding of engineering and design practices, evaluation of alternatives, recommendation development, and presentation of recommendations.
  • Ability to achieve nuclear site unescorted access/security clearance.
  • Ability to fulfill potential Emergency Response Organization responsibilities, including site callouts, defined response times, and on-call duty rotations while fit for duty.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment in office and plant environments.
  • Ability to work additional hours as workload or business needs require.
  • Ability to travel occasionally overnight.
Responsibilities
  • Support the generation of engineering equivalency evaluations and commercial-grade dedication packages for site-related maintenance issues.
  • Provide cost-effective engineering and testing solutions that improve plant performance and maintain safety margins by meeting design requirements, coordinating supporting activities, resolving equipment non-conformances, and ensuring document quality.
  • Evaluate and select prudent, cost-effective procurement alternatives consistent with schedules and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain understanding of item functions, testing requirements, and interpretation of test results.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable nuclear-industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements and guidance.
  • Provide engineering and technical expertise in identifying, analyzing, testing, and resolving routine problems.
  • Prepare technical reports, test reports, correspondence, and documentation for routine engineering and dedication work.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Experience in the nuclear utility industry.
  • A post-bachelor's degree, such as a Master of Engineering or professional school equivalent.
  • On-the-job nuclear procurement engineering or quality-assurance testing experience, including environmental qualification, seismic qualification/testing/analysis, functional testing, or dedication testing.
  • Working knowledge of power plant operations, including mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Experience with Nuclear Asset Suite, including Portal J, Passport, or Asset Suite.
  • Completion of the EPRI Procurement Training Course for Plant Engineering or equivalent training or experience.
  • Effective written and verbal communication across organizational levels.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, plan, and execute assigned work within allocated time.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments.
  • Working knowledge of the quality-assurance program and related documents.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience reading and interpreting procedures, drawings, specifications, and codes.
  • NAS Work Control and CAP experience.

Duke Energy cuts Eastern NC and Asheville rate increase from 15.1% to 9.3%

Duke Energy Progress has agreed to reduce its proposed rate increase for customers in eastern North Carolina and the Asheville area from 15.1% to 9.3% over two years. The average residential customer will pay an additional $9.62 per month starting January, plus $5.89 more beginning January 2028. The settlement also caps Duke's return on equity at 9.8%. This follows significant pushback from state leaders and customers after Duke Energy reported $5 billion in profits in 2025 and over $1 billion in net income last quarter. The North Carolina Utilities Commission will review the proposal starting 11 August, with a final decision expected this autumn. Duke Energy Carolinas previously lowered its rate increase to 9.5%. Both Duke utilities will merge into one by 1 January 2026.
