Transformation Project of the Year: who are the finalists? August 21, 2026 The 2026 Global Sustainability Awards finalists showcase transformation across energy efficiency, renewable power, circularity and bio-based solutions The transition from sustainability ambition to measurable operational change is becoming a defining priority for businesses across industries. As organisations seek to reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency and embed circularity into their operations, transformation projects are increasingly focused on delivering measurable environmental outcomes while maintaining business performance. The finalists for the Transformation Project of the Year at the 2026 Global Sustainability Awards showcase a range of approaches - from industrial electrification and renewable energy procurement to bio-based products and technology reuse. The 2026 Global Sustainability Awards, hosted by Sustainability Magazine, recognise organisations and leaders delivering measurable environmental and social impact across industries. Entries were assessed on demonstrable outcomes, innovation, scalability and transparency. Taking place on 8 September 2026 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London, the awards feature eight categories celebrating innovation, leadership and measurable results. The ceremony will bring together sustainability leaders, innovators and organisations for a black-tie gala dinner. Co-located with the Global Supply Chain Awards and Global Procurement Awards, the event highlights organisations working across sustainability, procurement and supply chain to support a more sustainable global economy. ABB and Aurubis' industrial energy transformation. ABB has been shortlisted due to its project with Aurubis, focused on improving energy efficiency at Aurubis' Pirdop copper plant in Bulgaria. The project is replacing 460 older motors with IE4 and IE5 high-efficiency motors, alongside ABB drives. More than half of the plant's existing motors were over 25 years old, while fewer than 5% reached IE2 efficiency or higher. The upgraded motor fleet is expected to deliver a 28% reduction in energy consumption compared with the plant's legacy motors, saving 25 GWh of electricity annually and reducing carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes per year. The project is expected to pay for itself within 3.5 years through energy savings. Bodycote's zero-emissions sites. Bodycote has been shortlisted for its Decarbonisation Roadmap & Zero-emissions Sites programme, which is focused on transforming energy-intensive heat treatment operations. The Derby and Rotherham facilities, which specialise in heat treating turbine blades for Rolls-Royce jet engines, now operate with zero operational carbon emissions. Both sites are fully electric, with 100% of electricity covered by renewable energy sources and no fossil fuels used in their operations. At the Derby site, Bodycote has also introduced a closed-circuit adiabatic cooling system. The technology has reduced electricity consumption by 73% and water use by more than 85%, while removing the need for chemical dosing and cleaning. Across the group, Bodycote has achieved a 27% reduction in energy intensity and a 29% reduction in associated carbon emissions compared with 2019 levels, while targeting a 46% reduction in operational emissions by 2030. Merck KGaA has been shortlisted for its Bio-Based Solvent Transformation, which targets the environmental impact associated with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The company has launched a portfolio of bio-based solvents manufactured using renewable feedstocks. The solvents deliver an average 25.9% lower CO[2] equivalent impact compared with conventional fossil-fuel-based HPLC-grade solvents while maintaining the performance required for analytical workflows. The solvents are compatible with established HPLC and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry methods and instruments, allowing laboratories to adopt the alternatives without redeveloping existing analytical methods. The project focuses on reducing environmental impact without requiring laboratories to change established processes. OurCoop's green energy transformation. OurCoop has been shortlisted for its Green Energy Transformation, which combines on-site solar generation, renewable energy procurement and community energy partnerships. The Society now has solar installations across more than 130 sites, including a solar carport and mini solar farm. Its solar estate has generated around 4.7 million kWh of renewable electricity over the past 12 months, saving more than 800 tonnes of CO[2] per year. OurCoop is also investing in long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreements to source electricity from offshore wind. Its first agreement, developed with four other independent co-operatives, supplies up to 56 GWh of green electricity annually from the London Array wind farm, with a second agreement expanding renewable electricity supply further. MTN's circular technology transformation. MTN has been shortlisted for Project Infinity, which demonstrates how device reuse can support both environmental and social outcomes. As part of a literacy pilot in Rwanda, 894 unused smartphones from MTN South Africa were repurposed through circularity partner GSM Systems. Working with Nabu, Rwanda's Ministry of Education and local implementation partners, the devices were delivered to 76 schools across seven districts. Each smartphone was pre-installed with the Nabu reading app, providing children aged five to 15 with access to culturally relevant stories in local languages and supporting a gradual transition to English. The programme trained 641 teachers to incorporate the devices and app into classroom learning. Over five months, it recorded a 276% increase in reading time and a 13% increase in book completion rates, demonstrating increased engagement with reading content. The project also delivered a measurable emissions benefit. Reusing the existing smartphones avoided the need for new device production, resulting in estimated emissions avoidance of 51 tCO[2]e. Together, the five finalists demonstrate how sustainability transformation can be delivered through different operational levers - from replacing inefficient industrial equipment and electrifying heat treatment to redesigning laboratory inputs, expanding renewable energy and extending the life of technology.
