June 05, 2026 The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is proud to celebrate a decade of its literacy program, Read for Adventure, and bringing Oklahoma families and communities together through reading and wildlife encounters. Read for Adventure is a literacy-focused program that inspires interests in animals and nature while rewarding participants with the unique opportunity to explore the OKC Zoo for free. Thanks to the popularity of the program over 100,000 Oklahomans have been able visit the Zoo at no cost in the last ten years. New this year, the OKC Zoo collaborated with the Oklahoma Department of Libraries to expand the program to feature 28 book titles for readers to choose from. The featured book list includes a variety of animal, dinosaur, and nature themed titles for young readers, with books ranging from picture books and nonfiction to favorite popular book series like Who Would Win by author Jerry Pallotta. Families can check out any book title from the list and upon returning it will receive a voucher redeemable for free general admission to the OKC Zoo for up to four people (child, adult, or senior). (NASDAQ: REKR) ("Rekor" or the "Company"), a leader in developing and implementing cutting-edge roadway intelligence systems, today announced it has reached an agreement in principle with the Oklahoma District Attorneys Council (OKDAC) to continue as the technology partner for its Uninsured Vehicle Enforcement Diversion (UVED) Program. The agreement, subject to final contract negotiations, carries a total value of $16.8 million over a multi-year term. According to the latest data from the Insurance Information Institute, the state now ranks 27th nationally in uninsured motorist rates - placing it in the bottom half of all states and marking a dramatic reversal from the mid-2010s, when Oklahoma and Florida vied for the worst uninsured driving rates in the country. "Oklahoma went from the worst in the nation to the middle of the pack," said Amanda Arnall Couch, director of the UVED Program. "That's a combination of smart policy, disciplined execution, and keeping the focus on public safety." Since 2020, Rekor has been the operational backbone of this progress. Authorized under Oklahoma statute, the Company's vehicle recognition sensors are deployed statewide, capture vehicle data, and cross-reference it with the Oklahoma Insurance Verification System. When an uninsured vehicle is identified, the owner receives a notice with photographic evidence and a clear compliance path: obtain liability insurance, pay an enrollment fee, and maintain insurance coverage for two years. The program diverts cases from the court system, easing the burden on law enforcement and the judiciary while delivering measurable public safety outcomes. The contract comes as the national uninsured driving crisis deepens. A recent U.S. News & World Report analysis found that the number of states where more than 20 percent of drivers lack insurance doubled from 2022 to 2023. Apr 8, 2026 The Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority announced on April 8 a statewide campaign called Safe Actions Save Lives, aiming to improve safety in highway work zones during the busy spring and summer construction season. The campaign highlights the importance of driver awareness as more than 130 active work zones are expected across Oklahoma this summer. Officials say simple actions like slowing down, staying alert, avoiding distractions, and buckling up can prevent crashes and save lives for both workers and drivers. Transportation Secretary and ODOT Director Tim Gatz launched the initiative at an April 6 commission meeting by reading a proclamation from Governor Kevin Stitt declaring April 20-24 as Oklahoma Work Zone Awareness Week. OTA Chief Engineer Trent January read the same proclamation at an April 7 board meeting. As part of the effort, new public service announcements will share stories from workers in construction zones. "Work zones are essential to maintaining and improving Oklahoma's transportation system, but they also require extra caution from drivers," said ODOT Chief Engineer TJ Dill. "By putting away distractions, slowing down and staying focused behind the wheel, every driver can help protect the men and women working on our roads and ensure everyone makes it home safely." Officials report that seventy-four ODOT and OTA employees have died while working in these areas. Many crashes are caused by inattentive driving or speeding through construction sites. "As the ACCESS Oklahoma long-range plan continues to expand, drivers will see more work zones along the state's turnpikes this summer," said January. "Work zone safety depends on everyone. Choosing to slow down, put the phone away and follow posted signs can prevent serious crashes and save lives." These pavement markings will serve as a tribute to the historical route that has shaped Oklahoma's story, as well as America's westward journey. The project is set to enhance ground visibility of the historic and iconic route, ahead of the Centennial celebration for the travelers expected to drive on the route this coming year. In 50 locations across the state of Oklahoma, 100 official Route 66 pavement markings will be installed. Each different location will feature the iconic Route 66 badge and will have customizations to reflect its community, with the location displayed at the top of the emblem. This week, work on these markings began in Bristow and will continue across Oklahoma, set to be complete by the end of April, if the Oklahoma weather permits. Both OKC and Tulsa will have four markings, with more sites distributed across Route 66. This project costs $341,000, made possible by 2024 grant funding from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. ODOT also made a significant contribution of $91,000 to help complete the project. Additional communities interested in Route 66 pavement markings beyond the 50 pre-selected locations can apply here, though applicants will be responsible for the funding of the markings. Oklahomans are advised to be mindful of lane closures or traffic delays, during the time it will take for the completion of the pavement installations. Drivers in Oklahoma are encouraged to stay alert and use caution to ensure safety. This initiative is a highly coordinated effort to create high visibility for Route 66 identifiers across the state, as Oklahoma has the most drivable miles of the iconic route, enhancing the need for the pavement markings.
