3M's fiber-optic tech for AI data centres could grow fivefold as Microsoft certifies expanded beam connectivity

3M, the company known for Post-it notes and Scotch tape, has developed expanded beam optical connectivity technology that helps data centre operators deploy fibre-optic networks faster for AI workloads. The technology saves 85% of installation time by spreading light across a wider surface, making connections more resistant to dust and vibrations. Microsoft has certified the technology for use in its Azure data centres after several years of testing. 3M is conducting trials with other hyperscalers whilst expanding manufacturing capacity. The business is expected to generate $40 million to $50 million in revenue this year but could grow four to five times over the next several years. 3M plans to double production capacity this year and again over the following 12 to 18 months.

3M's $3,120 annual dividend: 1,000 shares yield 1.94% after Aristocrat reset

3M stock generates $3,120 in annual passive income from 1,000 shares at the current quarterly dividend of $0.78, representing roughly a 2% yield. The company's Dividend Aristocrat streak ended in 2024 following the Solventum spin-off, which reset the quarterly dividend from $1.51 to $0.70. However, 3M has since raised its dividend twice consecutively, climbing to the current $0.78 rate. The payout appears sustainable with a ratio under 40% of guided 2026 earnings. CEO William Brown projects adjusted earnings per share of $8.50 to $8.70 for 2026 against the $3.12 annual dividend. The company reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $2.14 per share on $6.03 billion in revenue. 3M returned $2.41 billion to shareholders in the first quarter of 2026 through dividends and buybacks. Institutional ownership stands at 77.5% of the float. Ongoing litigation remains a concern, including PFAS-related lawsuits that prompted the original dividend reset.
