Requirements
  • High school graduation and completion of a pharmacy technician course are required.
  • Two years of acute-care experience are required.
  • A pharmacy technician certificate from the California Board of Pharmacy and Basic Life Support certification are required.
Responsibilities
  • Communicate with pharmacists, nurses, patients, physicians, and other ancillary personnel; resolve issues within the technician's scope and refer issues outside that scope to pharmacists.
  • Support pharmacy personnel by running fill lists, filling and delivering patients' cassettes, filling and exchanging stock medication trays, returning discharge medications and items to stock, maintaining pharmacy cleanliness, restocking unit-dose pick bins, running intravenous labels, filling and delivering intravenous medications, processing charges, entering information into the computer, filing billing, pulling discharges, entering patient orders, filling department orders, checking and reordering stock, printing and distributing medical administration records, entering skilled-nursing-facility and transitional-care-unit charges, and answering phones and door requests.
  • Coordinate training for all new pharmacy technicians and provide instruction so they become proficient in technician responsibilities within four to six weeks.
  • Perform additional department duties as needed or assigned by management.
  • Follow established hospital and department policies.
  • Participate in group projects and staff meetings with suggestions that improve the work environment and productivity.
  • Report equipment, supply, or procedure problems to the supervisor and request assistance when appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality related to job responsibilities.
  • Resolve problems as they arise.
  • Complete annual safety updates and general and departmental orientation within established time frames.
  • Attend at least 80% of in-service programs and maintain licensure or certification as appropriate.
  • Identify errors, inefficiencies, and inaccuracies; suggest and implement improvements; develop solutions to departmental problems; identify and implement cost-control or revenue-generating methods; maximize departmental efficiency; and measure progress against quality goals.
