Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, engineering, or a related field, plus five years of related programming and software systems experience including project management experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Ability to make decisions, organize work, analyze problems, solve problems, and multitask.
  • Ability to work in a typical IT environment and follow basic safety precautions when exposed to workplace hazards or physical risks.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat.
  • Ability to work in Georgia and commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based on business needs.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development, implementation, testing, and analysis of software applications to meet enterprise-wide business and user needs.
  • Consult with managers and directors to understand business needs and propose new or improved software applications.
  • Prepare reports containing recommendations, conclusions, and other data.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  • Lead technical design and architecture discussions to ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with long-term technology goals.
  • Manage the end-to-end software development lifecycle, including sprint planning, resource allocation, and project timelines, using agile methodologies.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide ongoing mentorship, and support the professional growth of software developers.
  • Define and enforce team-wide coding standards and best practices through code reviews.
  • Act as the primary technical contact for product managers and stakeholders, translating business requirements into detailed technical specifications.
  • Oversee software release and deployment processes, including management of continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines.
  • Direct recruitment and hiring for new developers, including interviewing technical candidates and facilitating team integration.
  • Mentor junior developers through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production incidents, and conduct post-incident reviews.
  • Contribute to technical architecture discussions and document design decisions.
  • Ensure best practices in code quality, testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines, and AWS cloud deployments.
  • Champion security, compliance, and data privacy standards across the platform.
  • Perform related responsibilities as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of software development in a research institution context.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science is preferred, with coursework including programming languages, software architecture, and project management principles.
  • Extensive software development experience, including five or more years of hands-on software development experience.
  • A proven track record of leadership and management experience, including at least two years in a managerial or lead developer role.
  • Two or more years of production experience with Node.js, Vue or React, and Nuxt or Next.
  • Demonstrated project work with process documentation, wireframes, and unit testing.
  • Ability to read unfamiliar code and understand it at the architectural level before modifying it.
  • Ability to translate vague feature requests into concrete technical plans.
  • Technical development expertise in JavaScript, Node.js, Vue or React, Nuxt or Next, Tailwind.js, GraphQL, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft Office, and related technologies.
  • Application Programming Interface experience, preferably with REST and GraphQL APIs.
  • .NET knowledge for supporting existing applications while migrating to Node.js.
  • Expertise using reporting environments such as Oracle Analytics Server and eBIZ.
  • Ability to profile Node.js services to identify CPU-bound operations, memory leaks, and event-loop blocking.
  • Basic understanding of AWS cloud services and cloud-based application development.
  • Docker or containerization experience.
  • Ability to respond efficiently to changing priorities, timelines, and scope using analytical and problem-solving techniques.
