Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Forestry, Horticulture, Turf Management, and/or Landscape Design.
  • Eight to ten years of experience with increasing responsibility in landscape maintenance.
  • Three to five years of supervisory or management experience.
  • A Commercial Pesticide Applicator license.
  • A Hoist Engineer license.
  • A United States driver's license.
  • Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, Maximo or other computerized maintenance management systems, and automated payroll systems.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate employee and organizational performance to assess efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and to multitask daily.
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with other trade supervisors and Facilities and university personnel.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and expertise for the Grounds unit of Facilities in maintaining 235 acres of campus terrain.
  • Oversee the daily work of internal grounds and mechanic/garage personnel and external contractors performing work on campus grounds and motor equipment.
  • Develop and implement programs and schedules for landscape and hardscape maintenance and construction, irrigation, disease identification and treatment, Integrated Pest Management, equipment maintenance, snow removal, and inclement-weather cleanup.
  • Oversee the Facilities fleet of vehicles and motorized and non-motorized equipment.
  • Prepare budgets and manage personnel, including planning, organizing, and training.
  • Lead and supervise a team conducting landscape maintenance, athletic field maintenance, and snow removal operations.
  • Train and supervise assigned staff, interview and select employees, conduct reassignments, terminations, and disciplinary actions, arrange substitute coverage, and review staff performance.
  • Perform daily administrative and financial duties using computer systems and applications for work management, payroll review and approval, purchase order creation, budget tracking, and email communications.
  • Assist in preparing bid specifications and information for service contracts and project work.
  • Assist in planning and monitoring capital projects involving campus landscape and hardscape.
  • Identify emergency and future planned budgetary needs.
  • Manage maintenance and repair of Facilities Services vehicles and motor equipment, including loaders and tractors.
  • Administer campus trash disposal, recyclable-material collection and disposal, and Universal Waste storage and disposal.
  • Ensure compliance with rules, laws, and policies related to hazardous-material handling and communications and Integrated Pest Management.
  • Manage the fleet program for Facilities vehicles, including temporary vehicle use, registration renewals, and insurance claims for accidents involving University vehicles.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies, either in person or by directing subordinate staff or external contractors.
  • Maintain compliance with state and federal codes, safety regulations, department policies, and University procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Massachusetts Certified Arborist license.
  • CAT 37 Pesticide License.
