Requirements
  • Three years of experience in a classroom, community service, and/or education setting.
  • A GED or high school diploma as required by state regulations.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • First aid, CPR, and emergency behavior intervention certifications.
  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Working knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic.
  • Proof of work eligibility status upon request.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug screens.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and biennial criminal background checks.
  • Ability to respond sensitively and competently to the service population's cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff members, service providers, and professionals.
  • Ability to provide crisis intervention according to Compass Connections training when needed to maintain a safe environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining emotional control and professional composure.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to meet the responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to work effectively without intensive supervision, independently, and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Working knowledge of Compass Connections policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Arrive on time and be inside the classroom no later than 15 minutes before students arrive.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining order and discipline in the classroom.
  • Communicate relevant concerns about students to the teacher, direct care staff, and the Lead English as a Second Language Facilitator.
  • Interact with children in ways appropriate to child growth and development.
  • Assess and evaluate student progress daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
  • Assist teachers and English as a Second Language Facilitators with classroom preparation, instruction, and cleanup.
  • Serve as a substitute teacher as needed.
  • Perform extensive data entry of student information, including assessment results and grades.
  • Prepare and execute effective lesson plans.
  • Administer assessments to help identify student progress.
  • Document and record scores and other relevant data accurately.
  • Maintain classroom presentation to promote an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment.
  • Attend planned Educational Services functions, including open houses, in-service events, and teacher workdays.
  • Perform telephone, filing, faxing, copying, and other clerical duties as needed.
  • Tutor students ages 5 to 17 across various grade levels, answer questions about assignments, and provide individual instruction and guidance.
  • Carry out supervisory teacher duties promptly and reasonably when necessary and agreed with the teacher.
  • Handle all student information confidentially.
  • Support, encourage, and recruit foster parents for Foster Care Programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Some college coursework in teaching science, social studies, mathematics, reading, writing, and English as a Second Language at all education levels, and/or social work.

Compass Connections is a nonprofit provider of community-based services for children, young people, and families. Programs include foster care, residential care, family preservation, behavioral health, and support for unaccompanied children. Teams work with public agencies and caregivers to provide safe, stable, and individualized services. Compass works in child welfare and human services, responding to safety, trauma, development, family relationships, and regulatory requirements through residential settings, foster networks, community programs, and public-agency partnerships.
