HSBC posts $19.5B profit and resumes buyback while UBS beats estimates but faces $125M US fine

HSBC Holdings posted first-half profit of $19.5 billion, beating estimates of $18.9 billion, and resumed share buybacks with a $1 billion programme. The bank raised net interest income guidance to exceed $46 billion and added 640,000 wealth clients. UBS Group beat forecasts with second-quarter net profit of $2.8 billion and announced a $3 billion buyback. However, the bank faces a $125 million fine from US regulators for anti-money-laundering failures. Hedge funds had been reducing UBS positions before the fine became public. HSBC's buyback fell short of the $2.2 billion investors expected, and the bank continues exiting businesses in Singapore, Egypt, and Australia. UBS reports its Credit Suisse integration remains on track for 2026 completion, with $12.6 billion in cumulative cost savings achieved.

UBS fined record $125M for money laundering violations despite 2018 pledges

UBS Financial Services agreed to pay a record $125 million civil penalty to the US Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network for willful violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, America's primary anti-money laundering law. The fine is the largest ever assessed against a broker-dealer for BSA violations. This marks FinCEN's second enforcement action against the Swiss bank's subsidiary. Despite paying $14.5 million in 2018 for similar failures, UBS subsequently failed to monitor more than 50,000 foreign currency wires worth over $10 billion between January 2019 and June 2023. FinCEN found UBS failed to conduct adequate customer due diligence for high-risk clients with ties to Russia and Latin America. The firm must hire an outside consultant to review its anti-money laundering programme. UBS can receive a $15 million waiver if it implements the consultant's recommendations.

Edenor raises $200M in third bond offering of 2025

Edenor, Argentina's largest natural gas distributor, raised $200 million through a re-opening of its 9.5% 2033 bonds on Thursday, marking its third international bond offering this year. The company priced the add-on notes at 99.326 to yield 9.65%. Bank of America, BTG Pactual, Santander and UBS served as bookrunners. Moody's assigned the notes an international B3 rating. Edenor said it intends to use the proceeds to refinance debt and fund investments and acquisitions. The company initially issued $550 million of the 2033 notes in April, following a re-opening of its 9.75% 2030 bonds in February. Local placement agents included Global Valores, Balanz Capital, Banco Mariva, Latin Securities and the Argentine branches of ICBC and Santander.

UBS CEO says AI pullback is healthy, warns geopolitical volatility poses bigger risk

UBS reported second-quarter net profit of $2.8 billion, meeting analyst expectations, whilst pre-tax profits reached $3.6 billion, up 64% year-on-year. CEO Sergio Ermotti highlighted strong momentum across investment banking, M&A and capital markets, describing the IPO market as "vibrant". The Swiss bank announced a new $3 billion share buyback programme, beginning with $1 billion over three months. Shares rose 2.5% in morning trading. Ermotti warned that geopolitical volatility could create "temporary headwinds" but said the bank was well-positioned to manage them. On the recent AI market correction, he called it "healthy" given recent concentration and rising valuations, emphasising diversification opportunities for clients across sectors beyond technology infrastructure.

UBS launches $3B share buyback as investment bank revenue jumps 26%

UBS Group has launched a $3 billion share buyback programme following strong second-quarter results that saw net income reach $2.8 billion, exceeding forecasts. The Zurich-based bank will begin with at least $1 billion in buybacks over the next three months, with the programme running until the second quarter of next year. The bank's Global Wealth Management division attracted $36 billion in net new money, significantly above analyst estimates of $21 billion. Investment banking revenue jumped 26%, driven by trading and advisory services. Equity capital markets and debt underwriting revenue rose 55%, whilst equities trading gained 53%. UBS benefited from increased trading activity that also boosted Wall Street peers, fuelled by geopolitical tensions and the AI boom. The bank cautioned about ongoing Middle East conflict and volatile energy prices whilst noting client activity remains healthy.
