Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED, or 10 years of work experience.
  • One year of optical field or customer service experience.
  • For work in Wisconsin, American Board of Opticianry Certification from the American Board of Opticianry and National Contact Lens Examiners is required.
  • Ability to remain constantly alert and work safely.
  • Ability to stand and walk constantly; use hearing and speech for oral communication; lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 0–25 pounds frequently; reach, grip, and use a keyboard for data entry frequently; use near and far vision and distinguish colors frequently; and occasionally perform bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements, judge distances and spatial relationships, lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 25–50 pounds, lift or move patients, detect odors by smell, and drive.
Responsibilities
  • Interpret and analyze current prescriptions and review historical information to ensure changes are consistent and reasonable.
  • Recognize inconsistencies and irregularities in prescription history and contact the doctor for discussion when questions arise.
  • Troubleshoot basic and advanced vision complaints related to eyeglasses and, at some locations, contact lenses.
  • Assist patients with eyewear selection and determine appropriate frame and lens selections while considering prescription implications.
  • Demonstrate product features and benefits to reinforce customer value and maximize sales.
  • Take necessary optical measurements, including pupillary distance, segment heights, and custom-fit-to-wear lens measurements, accurately and explain the procedures and reasons to customers.
  • Fit eyewear accurately and comfortably to the customer’s satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate proper eyeglass cleaning and storage techniques and suggest products to assist customers.
  • Inspect incoming jobs with a manual or automatic lensometer for prescription verification, using department and American National Standards Institute standards as quality-control guidelines.
  • Request corrections from the laboratory as necessary.
  • Manage on-site inventory within directed budgets, including frames, miscellaneous supplies, and over-the-counter accessory items.
  • Assist in dispensing contact lenses at some locations.
  • Maintain working knowledge of available insurance and safety plans.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
