Requirements
- Graduate from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- Hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
- Hold or be eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification and complete additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- Obtain Fundamentals of Critical Care Support certification immediately upon hire, based on class availability.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Demonstrate proficiency with computers.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills.
- Meet the physical requirements of lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, and walking while handling patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families during the inpatient and critical-care phase of hospitalization.
- Order additional tests or consultations to medically manage patients in collaboration with critical-care staff or under established protocols, scope of practice, and privileging guidelines.
- Perform, interpret, and communicate the results of diagnostic tests.
- Consult and communicate with critical-care and interprofessional services regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Develop individualized plans of care, including patient teaching, disposition and discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Participate in physician and team rounds.
- Identify unstable or complex patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate interventions using appropriate resources.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage the individual needs of patients and families.
- Use basic equipment safely.
- Facilitate patient discharge disposition or transfer by coordinating appropriate services.
- Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, interdisciplinary teams, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely.
- Perform initial assessments and develop plans for new admissions in conjunction with the critical-care attending physician or team.
- Ensure patient summaries and orders are current, comprehensive, and accurate.
- Ensure appropriate transition to the next team when a patient is ready to leave the intensive care unit.
- Perform appropriate procedures as directed by the critical-care team or within the scope of practice.
Desired Qualifications
- ACGNP, ACNP, or FNP certification is preferred.
- Acute care or critical care experience is preferred.
