During morning yoga on the pool deck, the instructor cued a warrior two pose, and I turned toward the house. Through a wall of glass, past the polished modern kitchen, the Utah desert opened up on the other side - a broad tableau of sandstone mesas and buttes rendered in shades of cream, pale gold, and rose in the early light. For a moment, indoors and outdoors felt like the same place. It's entirely by design. The new six-bedroom villa at Amangiri - the first completed home in a planned collection of 12 Aman-branded residences - was conceived to disappear into its surroundings. Set on nine acres within the resort's roughly 900-acre sweep of southern Utah desert, the residence comes with a private spa with a sauna and a steam room, a dedicated gym, and a 118-foot pool. It's a significant expansion for one of the most iconic luxury resorts in the American Southwest, and a long time coming. "This was always part of the master plan," says Mario Bevilacqua von Gunderrode, the resort's general manager. The villas address something the resort previously didn't offer: secluded space for multigenerational families or friends traveling together. "We have a lot of couples that travel with friends, so they usually get five or six rooms together. [These new residences] create an offering, with the additional privacy, for large groups." The villa was conceived by Marwan Al-Sayed of Masastudio, one of Amangiri's original architects, and his original design carries through. The structure sits low in the desert, with concrete, wood, and glass used to frame the cliffs and the changing light outside. An oculus skylight above the 12-seat dining table was inspired by Utah's slot canyons. The attention to detail is evident in every corner: the cozy gas firepit on my private terrace, the heated floors of an expansive bathroom, and a deep soaking tub under a window that puts the sandstone formations practically within arm's reach. A personal chef tailors every meal: Utah barbecue of grilled steaks and cornbread with sage-lavender honey butter one night; a Peruvian feast or Native American-inspired spread of blue corn polenta, ash bread, and roasted elk the next. Guests can dine indoors beneath the slot-canyon skylight or outside on the pool deck surrounded by the striking landscape. Each villa also comes with a dedicated host who reaches out before arrival to help plan menus and a custom itinerary, including private spa treatments and nighttime stargazing with a local astronomy expert. There's a raft of more adventurous options, too: guided via ferrata climbs, a kayak trip on the Colorado River, or a helicopter ride to the summit of Tower Butte for sunrise yoga or a lavish breakfast over 1,000 feet above the canyon floor. Amangiri works closely with partners from the Navajo Nation to offer slot canyon tours and on-property weekly cultural events, such as dreamcatcher workshops and hoop dancing performances.
