FedEx and UPS launch new parcel security tools to combat $220B e-commerce fraud

FedEx and UPS have introduced new security features to combat supply chain fraud and theft. UPS launched UPS Secure Commerce, combining existing insurance, tracking, and AI-powered fraud detection tools. The service helps e-commerce merchants identify fraud during checkout and manage post-purchase risks. E-commerce sales are projected to reach $6.88 trillion this year, with 3.2% lost to fraud, according to the Merchant Risk Council. Last year, UPS Capital insured 62 million packages and paid $132 million in claims. FedEx introduced Authenticated Delivery, which uses QR code verification to ensure packages reach only authorised recipients. The service targets high-value shipments like luxury goods and electronics. Both companies aim to reduce fraud, theft, and misdelivery whilst improving customer trust and operational efficiency for merchants.

Bank of America downgrades UPS to sell as $5.4B dividend plan nearly exhausts $5.5B free cash flow

Bank of America downgraded UPS to sell, citing structural cost pressures from the end of the US de minimis customs exemption rather than package volume concerns. The change requires UPS to create detailed customs data and collect tariffs on previously fast-tracked low-value parcels, adding administrative costs to already thin-margin shipments. UPS domestic cost per piece rose 8.7% year-over-year to $13.21 in the first half, whilst fuel expenses jumped 60.4%. The bank warned that planned 2026 dividends of $5.4 billion nearly exhaust expected free cash flow of $5.5 billion, leaving minimal cushion for compliance cost shocks. UPS shares closed at $95.81, down 6.73% over the past month but up 21.05% year-over-year. The stock has fallen 35.48% over five years.
