Requirements
  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • National certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • The role requires the physical strength or stamina to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing more than 40 pounds.
  • The role requires working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, and environments involving biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and plan disposition for immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
  • Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
  • Complete integrated assessments.
  • Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with hospitalist faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed before discharge and for outpatient follow-up appointments, as applicable.
  • Develop individualized plans of care for hospitalized patients, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
  • Provide care for patients across the age continuum covered by the practitioner's education and certification.
  • Identify unstable or complex hospitalized-patient situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting, as applicable.
  • Assist with collection of outcome measures, as applicable.
  • Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
  • Use equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
  • Promote learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
  • Complete all identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to approved hospital and WVUM policies and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of inpatient and ambulatory care delivery.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret cardiology data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist Hospitalist Faculty, Administrators, and Directors with collection of outcome measures.
  • Provide other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
  • Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
