Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a Health Science, business, or related field is required.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience within a healthcare professional, administrative, or laboratory management capacity are required, including one year in a people management or lead role.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job through ongoing skills and competency assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language is required to perform the essential functions of the job, especially activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively through a variety of channels with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a customer-service-focused manner.
  • The candidate must be able to use appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans and modify behavior to accommodate tasks, situations, and individuals.

Responsibilities
  • The manager is responsible for the management, planning, development, budget, and other administrative activities of a Houston Methodist Academic Institute department.
  • The manager plans, manages, and monitors operations supporting department activities.
  • The manager manages daily work activities of department staff and ensures quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency while assisting management in achieving strategic and operational objectives.
  • The manager provides guidance to staff and is responsible for staffing, budget compliance, staffing decisions including hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on work-related performance, and helping develop and implement policies and procedures for a safe and effective work environment.
  • The manager implements training, monitoring, and operations initiatives that ensure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation, regulatory, and government requirements.
  • The manager selects, schedules, supervises, retains, and evaluates department employees, provides staff development and mentoring, and develops direct reports to perform these functions.
  • The manager conducts department meetings, rounds on employees, completes performance appraisals, conducts new-hire feedback sessions, provides coaching and corrective counseling, and recognizes employee contributions.
  • The manager facilitates team dynamics and team-building strategies within and between departments and leads or facilitates department process improvements.
  • The manager provides operations and safety management for laboratory teams overseeing fewer than 20 full-time-equivalent employees, extramural funding of less than $2 million, and laboratory or clinical-based research.
  • The manager plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, schedules, and activities; sets priorities and functional standards; and directs staff to support service delivery and patient or customer satisfaction.
  • The manager participates on entity committees as a representative of the department.
  • The manager provides laboratory administration services, including purchasing supplies and equipment, maintaining safety and operations documentation, and assisting principal investigators with laboratory operations management.
  • The manager maintains the laboratory environment in coordination with building services, facility management, and employee health services.
  • The manager monitors and revises department safety plans and accreditation or regulatory safety guidelines, including infection-control principles, and confirms that staff maintain required credentials.
  • The manager uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations and supports performance-improvement and data-management or analysis functions.
  • The manager monitors and improves department workflow, reports accidents, near misses, and adverse events, identifies solutions collaboratively, applies lean principles, and promotes safety awareness.
  • The manager monitors employee compliance with policies, procedures, and human-resources standards and takes required actions for noncompliance.
  • The manager establishes and maintains the laboratory-specific safety manual, including all laboratory safety procedures, HSC protocols, and IBC protocols.
  • The manager establishes and maintains laboratory study methods containing all laboratory procedures conducted in the laboratory.
  • The manager maintains equipment inventory and coordinates regular maintenance and service with Biomedical Engineering or vendors.
  • The manager assists with department budget development, audits expenses within approved parameters, manages revenue and expense targets, and develops cost-effective staffing plans and schedules.
  • The manager implements financial and staffing strategies by optimizing productivity and supply or resource efficiency and minimizing incidental and percentage overtime.
  • The manager administers grants, contracts, budget preparations, and expenditures; manages faculty cost centers; and works with faculty to identify discrepancies.
  • The manager supports principal investigators and laboratory staff with purchasing laboratory supplies, equipment through MARS eProcurement, and services through iLab.
  • The manager identifies and implements innovative solutions for workflow and practice changes, leads unit projects and department or system-directed activities, and supports change initiatives.
  • The manager evaluates processes, recommends and implements action plans, follows through on sustainable change, and participates in developing new procedures and reviewing or revising existing procedures.
  • The manager builds strategic relationships with other areas, teams, departments, and units to achieve business goals.
  • The manager identifies developmental needs of self and staff and takes appropriate action, conducts staff development discussions, and maintains the manager's own development plan.
  • The manager assists the Chair with strategic planning for department missions and growth.
