Ottobock has released the #DearAI Community Library, one of the first open-source image datasets depicting people with limb loss and limb differences in everyday life. The library, powered by Microsoft and now available on Hugging Face, was created and annotated by the community itself to address AI's lack of disability representation. Research across 444 AI-generated images found not a single person with visible disability appeared in 37 occupations. When disability does appear, nearly 100% default to wheelchair depictions, making prosthetic users effectively invisible. An international group of Ottobock prosthetic users worked within Microsoft's Community Library Creator to select and annotate images against community-defined standards. The result includes two datasets covering upper and lower limb differences, showing people as parents, colleagues, athletes and community members. The library is freely accessible to researchers, developers, brands and creators at huggingface.co/ottobock.
German MedTech company Ottobock is acquiring Spanish firm Fesia Technology to expand its neuro-orthotics portfolio. The deal, expected to close in approximately six months, will add functional electrical stimulation (FES) technology to Ottobock's product range. Financial terms were not disclosed. Fesia, based in Donostia/San Sebastián, employs around 20 people and develops FES systems for patients with neurological conditions including stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injuries. The technology uses electrical impulses to stimulate weakened muscles and support the formation of new neural connections. Ottobock CEO Oliver Jakobi said neurological conditions are a major focus for the orthotics and prosthetics industry, with the number of affected people steadily increasing worldwide. The acquisition strengthens Ottobock's position as a global leader in neuro-orthotics whilst providing access to an innovative FES technology platform.
Ottobock SE KGaA reported solid earnings supported by strong cash flow conversion. The company generated €237 million in free cash flow over the past twelve months, significantly exceeding its statutory profit of €91.8 million. The company's accrual ratio of -0.11 for the year to March 2026 indicates its free cash flow substantially surpassed reported earnings, which analysts consider a positive sign. However, unusual items worth €30 million reduced Ottobock's profit during the period. These one-time expenses contributed to the strong cash conversion metrics but are not expected to recur. Analysts suggest that without these unusual charges, Ottobock should deliver higher profits in the coming year, assuming other factors remain constant.
Blue Arbor Technologies has secured a $5 million investment from Ottobock, the global prosthetics leader, to advance its RESTORE Neuromuscular Interface System. Ottobock will lead Blue Arbor's Series A financing and hold a board seat. The FDA breakthrough-designated RESTORE System provides a fully implanted neuromuscular interface connecting advanced prostheses directly to patients' residual muscles and peripheral nerves. It enables independent, simultaneous control of fingers, wrist and elbow, with trials demonstrating stable signal capture for over five years. In December 2025, surgeons at the Medical University of Vienna completed the first-in-human RESTORE procedure. Within days, the patient demonstrated functional use with an Ottobock prosthetic. Founded by Drs Paul Cederna, Theodore Kung and Alex Vaskov, Blue Arbor has been awarded over $60 million in research grants and published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.
