  • B.A. in journalism or related field required.
  • At least three years’ experience in business, investing or corporate finance reporting.
  • Knowledge of institutional investing in private markets, including infrastructure and real estate.
  • Ability to understand and use corporate financial documents such as quarterly earnings or 10-Ks or proxy statements in your journalism.
  • Proven ability to develop sources and work a beat.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to write accurately and clearly on tight deadlines while also engaging readers with compelling copy.
  • Ability to not only cover the news and generate enterprise features, but also to report and write insightful analysis.
Responsibilities
  • Cover infrastructure, real estate and other real assets such as agriculture, timber, natural resources and other commodities in both public and private markets.
  • Cover a handful of public pension funds: what they are investing in, board meetings, executive leadership changes, etc.
  • Produce breaking news articles, news analysis, news features and enterprise reporting for website and newsletters that may appear in the monthly newspaper.
  • Tell stories that dig deep into trends affecting institutional investing in the United States.

  • Skilled in social media, with track record of using social tools to enhance readership.
  • Scoop-obsessed, with a collaborative mindset.

Crain lays off more than 25 across publications

Crain lays off more than 25 across publications. November 11, 2025. Posted by chris roush. Detroit-based Crain Communications, which owns industry-specific publications as well as business newspapers in major cities, laid off at least 25 staffers late last week, multiple sources confirm to Talking Biz News. The layoffs included at least four editorial staffers - online editor Phil Nussel and reporters C.J. Moore, Julie Walker and Carly Schaffner - from Automotive News. There were also cuts at Crain's Cleveland Business, Crain's Chicago Business, Crain's Detroit Business and Crain's New York Business, where two editorial staffers were dropped. The company did not reply to requests for comment. Staffers were also cut at Ad Age and Modern Healthcare. The cuts included sales staff and business operations employees.
