Requirements
  • Be a registered nurse with advanced practice education, training, and certification to practice independently and provide primary healthcare.
  • Graduate from a master's or doctoral degree program with a pediatric nurse practitioner specialization accredited by a nationally recognized nursing accrediting agency.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency within the past two years in the required clinical discipline as specified in the service-specific credentialing instructions.
  • Have knowledge of professional nursing theories, principles, practices, and procedures for pediatric nurse practitioners.
  • Have knowledge of pharmacological agents used to prescribe patient treatment, including desired effects, side effects, and complications.
  • Have comprehensive knowledge of pediatric dosages and precautions.
  • Have knowledge of administrative requirements for documenting patient health and medical conditions, explaining procedures to patients and parents, documenting teaching, and providing follow-up care.
  • Hold specialty board certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, or another recognized national nursing certification organization appropriate to the specialty.
  • Possess a current unrestricted registered nurse license from any state.
  • Possess current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification.
  • Maintain current certification by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
  • Pass a government background check or security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of privileged provider services in accordance with the privileges granted by the medical treatment facility.
  • Direct, perform, or assist in instructing other healthcare professionals within the scope of clinical privileges or responsibilities.
  • Examine, diagnose, treat, or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
  • Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Order applicable diagnostic tests and request consultations or referrals with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other healthcare providers.
  • Direct and teach medical staff, provide educational lectures, and participate in in-service training for clinic staff in accordance with government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols.
  • Perform routine developmental assessments.
  • Diagnose and treat common childhood conditions.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance regarding common child health.
  • Provide childhood health services.
  • Perform school and sports physicals.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures and prescribe pediatric treatments and medications based on assessment results and standards of care within the scope of pediatric nurse practitioner practice and approved privileges.
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat acute episodic and chronic diseases, minor traumas, and behavioral or psychological problems in newborns, infants, children, and adolescents up to age 21.
  • Identify and manage specific pediatric illnesses.
  • Prepare and review case histories and clinical records for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents up to age 21; obtain health and developmental histories; record findings; and make critical evaluations.
  • Examine patients, determine the need for radiological examinations and clinical laboratory tests, interpret findings, perform or request special screening and developmental tests, notify patients of results, and adjust treatment plans as clinically warranted.
  • Evaluate patients' total healthcare needs and develop plans to meet those needs; teach patients and family members ways to maintain or improve health.
  • Provide healthcare and preventive services to pediatric patients and their family members, including age-specific anticipatory guidance on growth and development, nutrition, common illnesses, safety, and discipline.
  • Evaluate clinical practice and collaborate with healthcare team members as the primary care manager to improve patient care delivery for an empanelment of pediatric patients.
  • Make appropriate referrals to general pediatricians, family practice physicians, and specialty physicians as warranted.
  • Lead a healthcare team involving front-desk and administrative staff, medical technicians, and clinical nursing staff to provide comprehensive and preventive healthcare and screen and manage the patient population for chronic disease and developmental and preventive care issues based on national standards of practice and clinical practice guidelines.
