Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A state criminal background check and federal background check, if applicable, are required for regulated areas.
  • Ability to accurately use applicable computer software and equipment for access processing and follow downtime procedures.
  • Knowledge of procedures for reporting or documenting unsafe or hazardous conditions, incidents, and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail, stay organized, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to memorize and reference substantial information from written sources or appropriate personnel.
  • Understanding of medical insurance requirements for payment and basic knowledge of covered services.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to understand written and verbal communication.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; visual acuity within the normal range; manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment; ability to sit or stand for extended periods; and reading and comprehension ability.
  • Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with exposure to communicable disease and frequent interaction with patients, medical staff, and support staff.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain demographic, billing, and insurance information from patients, families, or legal guardians and enter it into registration and billing systems for service and claim processing.
  • Scan insurance cards and photo identification and provide patients with information about insurance, bill payments, and hospital procedures.
  • Complete managed care responsibilities related to pre-certification and authorizations when applicable.
  • Prepare standard consent forms, notices of privacy practices, and other registration paperwork, present them for signatures, and obtain electronic consent to treatment and patient financial obligations.
  • Collect deposits, co-payments, deductibles, and patient liability payments when applicable; provide receipts and document payments in registration and billing systems.
  • Prepare patient-identification armbands.
  • Balance daily receipts and the cash drawer for patient payments as needed.
  • Follow up on accounts based on system flags, including courtesy dismissals, comments, and red stickers.
  • Initiate screenings, obtain pertinent coverage information, and complete appropriate paperwork when required.
  • Perform medical-necessity checks and complete Advanced Beneficiary Notices as needed.
  • Schedule, reschedule, or cancel patients in accordance with hospital workflows.
  • Check order completeness and validate orders against scheduled services.
