UnitedHealth faces IRS probe over potential tax avoidance.

UnitedHealth faces IRS probe over potential tax avoidance. IRS seeks to recoup taxes based on UnitedHealth's transfers to a foreign subsidiary. Aug. 17, 2026 Bob Herman is the author of Health Care Inc., an award-winning weekly newsletter about the business of health and medicine. The Internal Revenue Service is investigating UnitedHealth Group, with an initial probe determining the health care conglomerate underpaid taxes during a four-year period by funneling money through a foreign subsidiary. The IRS is "seeking to significantly increase taxable income" from 2017 through 2020 and may force UnitedHealth to pay more "for subsequent years after 2020," UnitedHealth revealed in a recent regulatory filing. UnitedHealth received the notices, which have not been reported, from the IRS in March. These types of audits from the IRS are exceedingly rare and focus on how big companies transfer profits within themselves. Given UnitedHealth's size as one of the five largest companies in the world by revenue, this examination likely involves substantial sums of money. Unpacking the business - and secretive inner workings - of the U.S. health care industry

Who was Brian Thompson?

Who was Brian Thompson? 3 hours ago Brian Thompson was little known outside the American health insurance industry when he was shot and killed in the early morning hours in Midtown Manhattan in 2024. Suddenly, his corporate biography became international news: Mr. Thompson's promotion in 2021 to chief executive of UnitedHealthcare followed more than 20 years of climbing the ranks at the company, one of America's largest health insurers. Under Mr. Thompson's leadership, UnitedHealthcare experienced surging profits, with earnings from operations topping $16 billion in 2023, an increase from $12 billion in 2021. In 2024, Mr. Thompson received $10.2 million in compensation, including $1 million in base pay augmented by cash and stock grants. He was responsible for enormous growth in the company's insurance arm, which sells private health plans under Medicare Advantage, a program that through federal funding covers around 70 million Americans, mainly those 65 and older. Mr. Thompson quietly steered the division through inquiries and criticism from congressional lawmakers and federal regulators who accused it of systematically denying authorization for health care procedures and treatments. He was one of at least four executives named in a lawsuit that accused UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare's parent company, of hiding a Justice Department antitrust investigation from shareholders while insiders sold stock - including $15 million of Mr. Thompson's personal shares. Mr. Thompson was walking into a Midtown Manhattan hotel for UnitedHealth Group's annual investor day on Dec. 4, 2024, when a masked gunman shot him three times in the back and fled on a Citi Bike. UnitedHealth Group partners with UT Health Sciences to expand health hubs to more communities across Tennessee.

UnitedHealth Group partners with UT Health Sciences to expand health hubs to more communities across Tennessee. New support from the United Health Foundation will expand proven models that improve preventive care, chronic condition support and rural health workforce pathways across the state, part of a UnitedHealth Group effort to build healthier communities across the US -(BUSINESS WIRE)-UnitedHealth Group today announced new support to expand the University of Tennessee Health Sciences' health hub model statewide, helping more Tennesseans access preventive care, chronic condition support and local health resources in their communities. The new support includes a $4 million commitment, with funding from the United Health Foundation and technical assistance from UnitedHealth Group, to expand the network from five health hubs to 13 across the state by the end of 2027. This builds on nearly $2 million in support since 2022, underscoring an ongoing commitment to expanding access to care, improving health outcomes and supporting organizations working to meet the unique needs of communities across the state. "This philanthropic investment builds on a strong partnership that is helping us reimagine how care is delivered and accessed across Tennessee," said Dr. Peter Buckley, chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Sciences. "By expanding our health hub network and strengthening pathways into the health professions, we are bringing preventive care, health education and support services closer to where people live. Together, we are creating a model that improves health today while building a stronger, more sustainable healthcare workforce for the future." The health hub expansion is part of Communities of Health, an initiative launched by UnitedHealth Group to support community-based models in areas such as rural health, maternal and child health and preventive care. Communities of Health began through UnitedHealth Group efforts to expand doula care in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and to develop food-as-medicine initiatives in St. Paul, Minnesota. "Every community deserves the opportunity to thrive," said Danielle Gray, executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group and chair of the United Health Foundation. "Creating a healthier Tennessee takes sustained collaboration and investment in community-led solutions that improve access to care, address local health challenges and help more people live healthier lives. We're proud to support this work to reach more communities across Tennessee and to further expand these kinds of models in communities across the country." Communities of Health is another way UnitedHealth Group is helping make healthcare work better by supporting local solutions that reflect each community's needs. Through an initial $20 million commitment by the United Health Foundation in 2026, the program will expand across the country. Scaling success in Tennessee UnitedHealth Group has worked with the University of Tennessee Health Sciences and Shelby County since 2022 to develop health hubs, which help Tennessee residents prevent and manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Health hubs offer screenings, health coaches, safe exercise groups, healthy cooking classes and care in easy-to-access community locations. After successful pilots in Memphis and Shelby County, UT Health Sciences established rural health hubs at UT Extension Centers in Hardin and Decatur counties. Since 2022, health hubs have served more than 4,000 people through more than 20,000 visits. More than half of participants lowered their blood pressure, helping reduce their risk for serious health complications. New funding and technical assistance will focus on two goals: * Strengthening and expanding the Tennessee health hub model: Technical assistance will help health hubs generate sustainable funding, strengthen integration and improve data sharing. New funding will help expand this model into rural counties across West, Middle and East Tennessee, building toward a statewide network of 13 locations by the end of 2027, which will reach 200,000 residents. * Expanding the rural community health workforce: UnitedHealth Group will work with the UT Health Sciences College of Nursing and the UT Health Sciences College of Medicine to advance career pathways in rural areas, including rural-focused physician assistant, rural-focused nurse practitioner/midwife and health coach/doula dual certification. By expanding this proven model and strengthening the rural health workforce, UnitedHealth Group is helping ensure that long-term health is attainable for all community members, regardless of geography. "UnitedHealth Group has helped us strengthen our neighborhood health hub model so that more people can get access to the most essential preventive and primary care services," said Dr. Jim Bailey, director of the Tennessee Population Health Consortium at UT Health Sciences. "Every person needs a neighborhood health hub close to home if we want to be a healthier city, state and country. Everyone deserves access to the most essential primary and preventive care." "The innovation in Tennessee's health hubs is about human connection - building trust, understanding individual and community needs, and bringing care and compassion that actually improves health," said Catherine Anderson, senior vice president for health optimization at UnitedHealth Group. "The health hubs reinforce that healthcare works best when people connect directly with one another and trust the care they receive, shifting focus from treating illness to a proactive culture of preventive well-being across a community." UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (UNH) and Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (ISRG) just showed why beating estimates isn't enough.

UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (UNH) and Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (ISRG) just showed why beating estimates isn't enough. Published on July 27, 2026 at 3:31 pm by fatima gulzar in hedge funds, news. Two big healthcare companies, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) and Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) reported earnings the same week in July. Both beat what Wall Street expected. One stock jumped as much as 8%. The other fell as much as 13%. The difference between them shows what actually moves a healthcare stock right now. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) $417.28-0.09%: the turnaround is showing up in the numbers. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) blew past expectations. Adjusted earnings hit $6.38 a share versus the $4.90 expected, and revenue rose to $112 billion, also beating estimates. The company raised its full-year profit forecast to $19.50-$20 a share, up from "more than $18.25," a bigger raise than Wall Street hoped for. The stock climbed as much as 8% on the news. The main number was the medical cost ratio, which measures how much of collected premiums gets spent on care. It came in at 86.7%, better than the roughly 88.5% expected and improved from 89.4% a year ago. CFO Wayne DeVeydt said the gain came from plan-design changes, higher premiums, and tighter cost management, not from healthcare costs actually falling: "These results are not a reflection of trend bending or coming under control, but rather our efforts to start pushing down what is already an elevated number." UnitedHealth is also spending about $1.5 billion this year on AI to speed up approvals and catch billing errors and recently partnered with Anthropic, per the Wall Street Journal. Its Optum health unit swung from a 15% income decline last quarter to 29% growth this quarter. Not everything was positive. UnitedHealth lost 525,000 members from the previous quarter and expects to lose roughly 1.6 million more by year-end, mostly as rising costs push people out of coverage. DeVeydt called that trend "not a good thing for the system long term," even as higher prices on remaining customers offset the lost revenue for now. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) $370.73 +3.90%: A beat that wasn't enough. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG), maker of the da Vinci surgical robot, also beat estimates. Revenue rose 19% to $2.89 billion, above the $2.82 billion expected, and adjusted profit hit $2.80 a share versus $2.50 expected. None of it mattered. The stock had climbed as much as 4.2% earlier in the day, then fell as much as 13% after the earnings call and stayed there into the next session, touching its lowest price in over two years. As of July 23, it's down over 40% for the year against an 8% gain for the S&P 500. The issue was guidance, not the quarter itself. Intuitive kept its full-year forecast range unchanged at 13.5%-15.5% procedure growth but said it now expects to land near the middle of that range rather than higher in it as previously implied, a real softening even though the range itself didn't move. Worldwide procedure growth was nearly 15% for the quarter, down from 16% in Q1. In the U.S. specifically, it slowed more sharply, to 12% from 14%, the slowest U.S. pace in three years. CEO David Rosa said insurance and subsidy changes are pushing some patients to delay treatment, and GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are cutting into bariatric surgery volume, which fell by high single digits. Not everyone buys the concern. Abbott had dismissed the same ACA-subsidy worry as a "flawed assumption" the day before and raised its own forecast. Evercore's Vijay Kumar said the softness "rekindles the debate," while Leerink's Mike Kratky called the selloff "increasingly overblown." At least a dozen brokerages cut price targets anyway. Adding pressure, Johnson & Johnson just won approval for its own soft-tissue surgical robot, a new competitor in a market Intuitive has dominated for two decades. Same week, same sector but opposite signals. If both companies beat estimates, why did one stock soar and the other plummet? Because beating last quarter matters less than what a company says comes next. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) raised its forecast by a wide margin, signaling its cost improvements are durable. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) beat too but pointed to a weaker spot inside an unchanged range and confirmed that two real headwinds, i.e., insurance-driven delays in care and GLP-1 drugs cutting into bariatric surgery, were already showing up in its Q2 numbers and not just future risks. Investors reward confidence about the future far more than a solid quarter that's already over. Insider Monkey's hedge fund data. Insider Monkey's hedge fund database shows both stocks losing support before either report came out. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was held by 130 funds at the end of Q1 2026, down from 145, with dollar value held falling from $14.8 billion to $9.9 billion. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) saw a similar pullback, 103 funds versus 109, with value held dropping from $9.2 billion to $8.2 billion. Both stocks were already losing hedge fund conviction before this earnings news, a sign the broader healthcare sector has been out of favor, not just these two names. Conclusion. Same industry, same week, opposite reactions, and the lesson repeats across earnings season: a beat only matters with a reason to believe it continues. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) earned that belief with a guidance raise backed by real cost improvements. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) lost investors by confirming two genuine headwinds, insurance changes and GLP-1 drugs, are already hitting its numbers before J&J's new competition even enters the picture.
