Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Veteran status in the U.S. Armed Forces is a plus.
  • Lived expertise in homelessness or human services is a plus.
  • Ability to travel to outreach events and engage Veterans in the field is required.
  • Willingness to travel regularly across various locations, including homeless shelters and Veterans Affairs locations, for up to 80% of the time is required.
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours, including Veterans Day and occasional weekend hours, is a plus.
Responsibilities
  • Provide outreach through distributing materials, delivering informational and educational presentations, and marketing to community members and possible participants.
  • Address crowds of varying sizes and offer program presentations.
  • Provide resource and referral services, particularly for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs services and entitlements, public benefits, and housing resources.
  • Develop, assess, and monitor a strategic outreach plan and resources with SSVF staff and other SSVF programs.
  • Interface with representatives from referring agencies and partnering service providers to facilitate program services and maintain a steady flow of referrals.
  • Assist program participants in accessing community services, including housing, employment, medical, psychological, substance abuse, vocational, food, and clothing services, through referral-network development, referrals, and follow-up.
  • Maintain a small caseload of SSVF participants in accordance with SSVF standards.
  • Assist with developing Housing Stability Plans and completing follow-up recertifications with participants.
  • Act as an advocate for participants when appropriate and encourage and support self-advocacy.
  • Maintain working relationships with colleagues and program managers.
  • Document all services in compliance with agency standards.
  • Work as part of the social service team to develop on-site and off-site socialization, educational, risk-reduction, and skill-building activities supporting permanent housing stability.
  • Serve as a liaison to community-based services and groups, including civic, social service, government, business, landlord, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Participate in individual supervision, team meetings, case conferences, division meetings, and trainings.
  • Participate in SUS Veterans Service Fairs and other events.
  • Complete other tasks assigned by the manager.

S:US provides services and advocacy for New Yorkers facing homelessness, intellectual/developmental disabilities, behavioral health and addiction challenges, poverty, criminal justice involvement, and trauma. It supports tens of thousands of individuals and families in New York City and Long Island with about 1,800 staff.
