About the Role
Valo is hiring an exceptional Software Engineer to build and transform the infrastructure that undergirds our computational drug discovery and development platform.
You’ll write software and partner with stakeholders, primarily engineers and data scientists, to create and implement solutions that improve our SDLC process and infrastructure. Success in this role will enable engineers and scientists of all stripes to build and deploy tools, services, products, dashboards, and ML models quickly, reliably, and safely. Your work will further accelerate our ability to quickly and cost effectively discover, develop, and deliver life changing drugs to patients who need them.
Your deep expertise in infrastructure, software development, and technical leadership will be called upon to create optimal solutions that fit our performance needs and deadlines. You will have significant impact on the future of our services. Additionally, the wider organization will depend on you as a subject matter expert. In this senior engineering role, you will be expected to take ownership of complex projects and their completion.
Key Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional experience in a Software Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, or systems-focused role
- Expertise in at least one programming language (bonus points for Python, Java, Go) as well as comfort reading and programming in others
- Passion about building reliable, high-performance platforms that are easy to monitor, maintain, use, and extend
- Significant career experience building and supporting mission-critical systems that are high-throughput or high-uptime (ideally both)
- Extensive experience working with AWS, GCP, or other cloud computing platforms
- Experience working with virtualization, containerization, and orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker, etc)
- Previous success mentoring and training technical team members
- Demonstrated expertise in Linux systems administration and monitoring
- Experience implementing CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code
- Strong debugging skills, especially for complex production systems
- A bias for automation and using technology to remove operational load, with awareness of time tradeoffs
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or equivalent experience
Bonus
- A background in drug development or another healthcare or biotechnology field
- A deep understanding of Python or Java environments and virtual machines
- Experience implementing and debugging distributed systems
- Professional experience programming in Java
- Experience with HIPAA compliance or other requirements around sensitive data

Base Salary: $188,000 to $208,000
This range represents the low and high end of the anticipated annual base salary range for the San Fransisco based position. The actual annual base salary will depend on numerous factors such as: experience, knowledge, skills, and if the location of the job changes.
