Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and four+ years work-related experience
  • Electrical experience in the commercial, industrial, or marine fields
  • Must pass employer performance tests and IAW standard governmental agencies certifications
  • Must maintain Association of Boards of Certifications (ABC), International Maritime Certification Institute (IMCI), or American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) certification; or have completed equivalent Military “A” school in the field of electrical maintenance and have held the applicable NEC/MOS
  • Must be able to read marine blue prints and work from standard and metric specifications
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Must be able to apply the craft, vocational or administrative skills, and methods taught in specialized training and or learned through formal apprenticeships; other important skills include manual skills
  • May be required to hold electrician's license
Responsibilities
  • Performing installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment for the generation, distribution or utilization of electric energy (lighting, generators, transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems)
  • Working from blueprints or drawings to troubleshoot electrical systems
  • Working from computations of working standards relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment
  • Following electrical code, manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and other specifications
  • Using hand tools, power tools, and electrical and electronic test equipment
  • Planning layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, based on applicable specifications and standards
  • Connecting wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components
  • Testing electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devises, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system
  • Using a variety of tools or equipment such as measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, ammeters, or test lamps
  • Inspecting electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, to ensure compliance with standards
  • Preparing sketches or following blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to safety codes
  • Diagnosing malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Working from ladders or scaffolds to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures
  • Diagnosing and repairing/replacing faulty electronic components using electronic test equipment and hand tools
  • Planning layout of wiring and install wiring, conduit, and electrical components onboard Navy vessels
