- High school graduation or equivalent is required.
- No prior experience is required.
- No licensure or certification is required.
- Approved competency on file is required before performing phlebotomy.
- Perform specimen receiving and processing, patient registration, computer order entry, centrifugation, labeling and aliquoting of samples, delivery to test sites, and sample storage.
- Stock supplies and prepare and stock reagents.
- Assist with maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment, including refrigerators and centrifuges.
- Answer the telephone and greet guests in the department.
- Report work activities and pending work to oncoming staff.
- Process requests and specimens for reference laboratories.
- Perform departmental functions using hospital and laboratory information systems.
- Follow established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with organizational policies and applicable standards.
- Maintain compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Participate actively in the laboratory Quality Improvement Program.
- Document specimen quality issues.
- Practice infection control and safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records and hospital and departmental matters.
- File reports and requisitions.
- Assist with charting and report distribution by telephone, fax, or other appropriate methods.
- Support productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability goals.
- Perform phlebotomy as necessary after approved competency is documented.
