Shawmut Design and Construction has opened a permanent office in San Diego's University Town Center, expanding its presence in a key life sciences market. The $2.3 billion construction management firm has been delivering projects in the region since 2003. The company has completed multiple renovations at Petco Park for the San Diego Padres and recently led work on the Sheraton San Diego Resort. The new office, located at 3655 Nobel Drive, will allow Shawmut to pursue opportunities in life sciences, healthcare innovation and higher education. "A permanent presence allows us to better serve clients in a region defined by world-class life sciences research," said Greg Skalaski, executive vice president of the West Region. The 100% employee-owned company operates 15 offices nationally, with over 80% of its business from repeat clients.
Shawmut unveils growth plan, new leadership roles. Shawmut Design and Construction, a $2.3 billion national construction management firm, announced a bold national growth strategy to reach $5 billion, adding new leadership roles and expanding into new geographies and sectors, including mission critical. Joel Nickel Image Courtesy of: Shawmut Design and Construction Les Hiscoe, who just completed his 10th year as Shawmut's chief executive officer, said the company has a clear, deliberate pathway to more than double revenue through strategic acquisitions, key hires, office openings, and building on its demonstrated success in large, complex projects. The firm's large project division has grown its portfolio to include FM's new 17-acre research and development campus in Norwood, Mass.; St. John's University's new Health Sciences Center in Queens, N.Y.; and Walmart's new home office in Bentonville, Ark., installing over 1 million square feet of cross-laminated timber to solidify Shawmut's leading mass timber expertise. "Our aggressive growth plan positions us for resilience and a stable backlog in any market as we deepen our roots and expertise in existing sectors and project types while expanding into new ones," Hiscoe said. "We will lead through the passion, energy, skill, and dedication of our people, staying true to who we are and providing exceptional client service every step of the way." Shawmut has demonstrated its ability to stay true to its values amid rapid growth: in 2021, Shawmut expanded its traditional focus to include larger, more complex projects. That shift doubled Shawmut's revenue from less than $1 billion to more than $2 billion in under three years. And Shawmut grew in lockstep with clients - more than 80 percent of its revenue comes from repeat business. As a key component of its growth strategy, Shawmut has expanded its leadership team. Kathleen Abbott has joined as the company's first chief revenue officer, tasked with driving strategic growth across regions, sectors, and services. Abbott spent 23 years at Arcadis, the world's leading company in sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions. Abbott will operate upstream on opportunities while shaping strategies, building global client relationships, and leading teams to deliver growth. Shawmut has also hired Joel Nickel as its head of mission critical, a pivotal role to shape Shawmut's entrance into this sector, notably data centers. Nickel brings deep expertise in mission critical facilities, with a proven ability to scale teams and deliver complex projects. "Mission critical is the backbone of AI, cloud, and national infrastructure. Demand is exploding and clients are looking for experienced, reliable partners who can keep up," Hiscoe said. "This is a natural extension of Shawmut's growth in large projects and reinforces our commitment to innovation, diversification, and long-term growth." The addition of Abbott and Nickel follows the elevation of existing Shawmut leaders in 2025. Paul DiMarino, chief information officer, is working to fast-track new technologies to enhance the client experience and framework for growth; Michelle LaFleur, chief people officer, is driving culture and talent to allow employees to deliver their best; and Marianne Monte, chief of staff and head of mergers and acquisitions, is responsible for inorganic growth. Kathleen Abbott Image Courtesy of: Shawmut Design and Construction Shawmut is also adding a new office in San Diego to expand its offerings and opportunities in a top U.S. market for life sciences, establishing a permanent home after building in the city since 2003."These moves reflect our momentum and mission to build a stronger, more forward-looking organization that is focused on rapid and sustainable growth," Hiscoe said. Roger Williams University offers construction scholarships. Roger Williams University (RWU) in Bristol, Rhode Island, has selected four incoming students for its Shawmut Scholars program, a partnership between RWU and Boston-based Shawmut Design and Construction. The program offers full-tuition scholarships, guaranteed paid internships and mentorship from industry professionals for students majoring in construction management or those majoring in architecture or business who commit to a construction management minor. The program has been designed to ensure students graduate not only with degrees but also with four years of practical, hands-on construction experience and professional networks that typically take years to develop in the field. "Our partnership with Shawmut gives students unparalleled access to the profession: mentorship from industry leaders, hands-on experience on active job sites and the confidence to lead," RWU President Ioannis N. Miaoulis says. "We are proud to welcome this new class of Shawmut Scholars and excited to see the impact they will make on designed and built environments." The new class of Shawmut Scholars follows a previous scholar group who graduated from RWU this May. Two alumni have entered into careers with Shawmut's offices in Boston and Providence, Rhode Island, while another relocated to pursue other opportunities. "We are proud to launch the second cohort of Shawmut Scholars with our partners at RWU," says Michelle LaFleur, chief human resources officer at Shawmut Design. "This marks the start of a meaningful four-year journey where Shawmut team members will serve as mentors and champions, helping scholars explore careers in construction, gain real-world experience and build lasting relationships. "We couldn't have a better partner in developing the next generation of talented professionals than Roger Williams, with its outstanding and nationally ranked programs in construction management and engineering. Together, we are committed to building a broader talent pipeline into the industry, and we're excited to support these Scholars as they shape their future." The Shawmut Scholars program was launched in 2021 and is designed to provide skilled construction leaders with substantial hands-on experience. In addition to classroom instruction, the students rotate through active construction sites, shadow project managers, learn safety protocols firsthand and work on budgets and schedules. The incoming round of Shawmut Scholars includes Kat Almeida, a construction management major from Rhode Island; Emma Jackson, a construction management major from Connecticut; Andie Moreira, an architecture major and construction management minor from New Hampshire; and Ary Ponce, an architecture major and construction management minor from New York.
