HubSpot and Atlassian outshine PubMatic as software stocks gain 39.6%

Two software stocks are on investors' watchlists whilst one faces headwinds, according to recent analysis. PubMatic, valued at $791 million, is flagged as a sell due to customer churn reflected in its 96% net revenue retention rate and increasingly competitive market conditions requiring higher sales and marketing spend. HubSpot, worth $11.28 billion, shows promise with 20% annual revenue growth over two years and an 83.2% gross margin. The company maintains steady long-term contract flows, trading at 2.8x forward price-to-sales at $224.65 per share. Atlassian, valued at $41.26 billion, also features on the watchlist. The company provides collaboration and knowledge-sharing tools for teams. Investors are advised to exercise caution as AI threatens to commoditise many software products.

Atlassian's CEO plans to personally purchase up to $250 million in company stock. Cloudflare reported second-quarter revenue of $696.1 million, up 36% year-over-year, beating expectations of $666 million. Management raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $2.864 billion–$2.870 billion from $2.805 billion–$2.813 billion. Atlassian stock surges 74% in one month on strong cloud growth and AI platform adoption

Atlassian shares surged 74% in the past month following strong fourth-quarter earnings, though the stock remains roughly 50% below its all-time high from early 2025. The software company reported 28% year-over-year revenue growth, with its cloud segment accelerating to 31% growth. The company is migrating customers from on-premises deployments to its cloud platform by 2029. Management forecasts a 17% decline in data centre revenue for the year, resulting in overall 13% slower growth in 2027. However, Atlassian could outperform expectations. Its AI platform, Rovo, is driving strong adoption, with users growing annualised recurring revenue at twice the rate of non-adopters. Atlassian spends $1.8B on buybacks while generating only $1.3B in free cash flow

Atlassian has spent $1.8 billion buying back shares over the past twelve months, exceeding its free cash flow of $1.32 billion by 26.7%. The gap raises questions about the sustainability of the repurchase programme. The company's net cash position has declined approximately 87% year-over-year, from roughly $1.95 billion to about $250 million. Despite the buyback activity, Atlassian's stock returned only 1.2% over the past twelve months, lagging the market by 15.9 percentage points. The business itself remains robust. Revenue grew 28% in fiscal Q4 2026, with cloud revenue up 31%. Atlassian's AI product Rovo is used by over 80% of Fortune 500 companies. The company's Teamwork Graph, containing 25 years of collaboration data across 200 billion objects, remains its core value proposition.
