Centene reported a $1.09 billion net profit in the second quarter, rebounding from a $253 million loss a year earlier, as the health insurer gains control over rising medical costs. The company's health benefits ratio, which measures the percentage of premiums spent on medical care, improved to 89.6% from 93% in the prior-year period. Its commercial health benefits ratio stood at 79.2%. Chief executive Sarah London said the results represent "meaningful milestones" in restoring profitability. Centene raised its earnings guidance for 2026 based on improved cost structure. The company now covers 25.9 million people, down from over 28 million a year ago, largely due to reduced marketplace plan enrolment under its Ambetter brand.
