Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of actuarial experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, or a related analytical field.
  • Credentialed actuary (ACAS or FCAS) preferred; will consider candidates who are actively taking exams.
  • Proficiency in Excel, with strong computer skills.
  • Preferred experience includes programming knowledge in SQL, and familiarity with common data science tools like R or Python.
  • Experience with Power BI and ResQ software is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
  • Conducting thorough research and analysis to evaluate potential new lines of business, establishing rates and pricing strategies that align with Markel's commitment to profitable premium growth and cost-based pricing.
  • Investigating new business opportunities as requested, providing data-driven insights and recommendations.
  • Effectively communicating findings to actuaries and underwriters, presenting analyses clearly and responding promptly to requests for alternative structures or assumptions to better represent the risks under review.
  • Delivering presentations on actuarial analyses to diverse audiences, ensuring both actuarial and non-actuarial stakeholders fully understand results and their implications.
  • Proactively identifying and communicating potential actuarial issues to relevant teams.
  • Mentoring and serving as a resource for less experienced actuaries, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Working closely with Markel’s Ceded Reinsurance Department this role will provide analytic capabilities to enhance our ability to analyze structures and strategies to optimize profitability and return on capital within internal risk appetites.
  • Support post placement data capture and analysis, including spend analysis, cost allocation and impact on profitability.
  • Build strong working relationships with our reinsurance brokers, underwriting leadership, actuarial teams, and key data owners.
  • Work with our reinsurance brokers to request analysis in support of company objectives and communicate findings to the business.
