Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalence plus one to three years of experience as a flux core arc welder is desired.
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, appropriate work processes, and techniques for fitting and welding steel and other materials is required.
  • Knowledge of ship terminology, welding symbols, safety, Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements, and American Bureau of Shipping regulations is required.
  • Experience and knowledge of gouging, mirror welding, metal inert gas welding, stick welding, and carbon, stainless steel, and aluminum welding are required.
  • Must pass American Bureau of Shipping welding tests to become American Bureau of Shipping certified.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, diagrammatic, and blueprint information is required.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions is required.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and use of hand and power tools is required.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic using all units of measure and read a tape measure is required.
  • Ability to work above ground at heights of at least 50 feet, from scaffolding or man-lifts, in confined spaces, and in extreme heat and cold is required.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and meet the associated physical and medical requirements is required.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds is required.
Responsibilities
  • Lay out, fit, and weld fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, and building and bridge parts according to specifications.
  • Select equipment and plan the layout, assembly, and welding of components.
  • Work with other crafts as instructed by supervision.
  • Maintain regular attendance and work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Comply with company, federal, state, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Monitor the working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations.
  • Weld components in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
  • Fit, tack, and weld component parts in position, and examine welds for adherence to specifications.
  • Examine welds for bead size and other specifications.
  • Inspect grooves, angles, and gap allowances using a micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts, and assemble them according to specifications.
  • Set up equipment and weld parts using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding equipment.
  • Produce high-quality welds, including watertight penetrations, using weld steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Perform carbon air arc cutting on butt seams, prepare seams after gouging, and remove structures when needed using the carbon air arc technique.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
