Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Law degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association; or second- or third-year law student status in, or graduation from, a law school accredited by the American Bar Association; or completion of an applicable bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or completion of designated applicable coursework from an accredited college of law in criminal procedures, constitutional law, and legal research equivalent to the stated qualifications; or any equivalent combination of experience, training, and education approved by Superior Court Human Resources.
  • Additional relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college of law may be substituted.
  • Incumbents must maintain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid.
  • The position typically requires work in an office environment and may require lifting materials or equipment weighing 20 pounds or less.
Responsibilities
  • Research case law or other legal matters as directed by the Judicial Officer and develop interpretations of legal opinions.
  • Research and verify points of law cited by attorneys in memoranda to the Judicial Officer.
  • Provide input on and discuss pending cases and decisions with the Judicial Officer.
  • Participate in conferences and discussions between trial attorneys and the Judicial Officer.
  • Assist in researching, drafting, and formatting judicial paperwork, including opinions, decisions, and citations.
  • Review proposed Default Decrees, Consent Decrees, and Summary Consent Decrees for compliance with rules.
  • Prepare the judge's files for court proceedings, including cover sheets, notes, relevant case law, past orders, and current requests.
  • Assist in tracking and processing complex litigation assigned to the court.
  • Maintain the Judicial Officer's law library and assemble and update documents.
  • Enter hearing outcomes and results into the court software system in real time to maintain updated data, modify records, or initiate court-ordered actions.
  • Use court database systems to upload final documents into the court docket.
  • Assist with emergency evacuations as directed in the Disaster/Emergency Response Procedures manual.
  • Perform other legal administrative tasks supporting administration of the Judicial Officer's docket and caseload.
  • Prepare the courtroom for the daily calendar and coordinate actions with the Courtroom Clerk and other applicable parties.
  • Ensure all parties involved in proceedings are present.
  • Prepare court files, distribute the court calendar, review files for missing information and court readiness, review motions for accuracy and compliance with procedural rules, and contact parties for missing information.
  • Maintain order in the courtroom during court sessions.
  • Prepare the jury room, oversee jury panels, escort jurors to and from the courtroom, and attend to jury needs, including answering non-legal questions.
  • Maintain the jury deliberation room in an orderly manner.
  • Maintain the integrity of the jury and ensure that no outside person communicates with jurors while they deliberate.
  • Escort jurors and witnesses to and from the courtroom.
  • Contact attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and other required participants in court sessions and provide information as necessary.
  • Assist with emergency evacuations as directed in the Disaster/Emergency Response Procedures manual.
