Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B or obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, comply with all college driving credentialing requirements, and obtain a Department of Transportation certificate.
  • Must be able to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds regularly and up to ninety pounds occasionally, bend, walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders, and safely operate loaded hand trucks and dollies.
  • The driver must not have a history of moving vehicle violations or vehicle traffic accidents.
  • Must possess a current Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators license or obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Must possess a hoisting license or obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in accessing the internet and using the Smith College email, finance, payroll, calendar, and work order systems.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must have a high school or vocational diploma, GED equivalent, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a minimum of three years of related experience in landscape construction, landscape maintenance, and turf management.
  • Some formal training in turf management or a related field is required.
  • Must have customer service skills and the ability to work effectively with staff, students, college community members, and visitors.
  • Must be able to use good judgment and take appropriate independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job.
  • Must possess knowledge of turf maintenance, including sustainable landscape maintenance practices.
  • Must have knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations for the safety of college employees, users, and properties.
  • Must demonstrate understanding of chemicals used in the role, including the ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets.
  • Must be able to carry out oral and written electronic instructions.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must have a clear understanding of the union contract and all college policies.
  • Must be able to safely lift heavy objects and operate power equipment related to the job.
  • Must be able to kneel, crouch, and bend repetitively for extended periods.
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge of irrigation installation and repairs.
Responsibilities
  • Assist campus and athletic area groundskeepers in maintaining the health, aesthetics, and safety of the campus landscape, including turf, plant beds, sidewalks, roads, irrigation, drainage, trees, shrubs, ivy, and lawns.
  • Plant, fertilize, water, weed, trim, and groom plant beds, lawns, shrubs, and related landscape areas.
  • Assist with formulating, mixing, and applying pesticides across campus in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Remain current in appropriate regulatory requirements pertaining to restricted pesticide application.
  • Assist with identifying and recommending solutions for turf diseases, pest infestations, and other turf deficiencies using an organic systems approach when feasible.
  • Maintain campus grounds, including plant beds, lawns, trees, shrubs, athletic areas, roads, walks, and irrigation systems.
  • Mow lawns and operate power equipment as required on campus.
  • Observe Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety regulations and practices and participate in required safety programs.
  • Assist in constructing, maintaining, or improving underground utilities and site work related to the grounds department.
  • Complete assigned project work.
  • Safely drive college equipment and vehicles as necessary.
  • Clean equipment and vehicles, inspect them for damage, perform a visual check before use, and immediately report issues to the supervisor.
  • Safely operate departmental motorized vehicles and equipment, including snow-removal equipment, hand-operated snow blowers, sanding equipment, mowing equipment, trucks, recycling equipment, and tractors with and without attachments.
  • Provide backup staffing as necessary.
  • Perform irrigation repairs and install, repair, and maintain turf, shrubs, and plants.
  • Perform general labor tasks, including mowing lawns with power or hand mowers, trimming hedges, loading and driving trucks, removing debris, demolishing walls, hand digging, raking leaves, and removing snow with hand shovels and blowers.
  • Maintain positive public relations with members of the college community.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
