Responsibilities
  • Manage store associates, sales, customer service, safety standards, product availability, store appearance, and profitability for a retail store.
  • Oversee merchandising departments, including Garden, Hardware, Lumber, Building Materials, Plumbing, and Electrical, to execute core programs that improve customer service, product availability, and store appearance.
  • Manage associates and operations to achieve sales goals, drive profitability, and mitigate shrink.
  • Partner with the Store Manager, other Assistant Store Managers, and merchandising field teams to develop strategies and objectives that drive sales and profitability and to implement department strategies.
  • Direct associates to top priorities throughout the store and provide regular coaching while ensuring associates understand department merchandise and services.
  • Drive customer service and associate engagement; coach associates on customer service techniques and ensure the team provides a high level of customer service.
  • Lead the GET culture, observe customer interactions, recognize successful behaviors, and coach associates on improvement opportunities.
  • Teach, coach, and train Department Supervisors and associates on customer service standards and operational excellence.
  • Manage customer service activities to optimize and sustain sales performance, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Resolve customer concerns effectively and take necessary action promptly.
  • Walk departments with Department Supervisors to maintain store standards and identify shelf-outs for immediate pack-down and on-hand adjustments.
  • Conduct quality walks, identify low-stock and out-of-stock features, validate pack-down processes and on-hand accuracy, and escalate opportunities to appropriate merchandising partners.
  • Partner with Asset Protection to monitor areas of high shrink activity and walk top shrink classes for on-hand accuracy.
  • Ensure Department Supervisors follow clearance and reduced-tag processes.
  • Assist with recruitment and interviews, make recommendations in the selection process, and make hiring decisions for qualified candidates.
  • Review training completion, ensure department training is current, and promote associate engagement through available learning tools.
  • Evaluate performance and take personnel actions involving work allocation, training, development, performance management, compensation, problem resolution, discipline, and terminations.
  • Monitor associate engagement levels, drive associate-feedback initiatives, and identify and resolve associate concerns.
  • Delegate tasks to Department Supervisors, teach them to assign tasks, and follow up with their associates.
  • Use coaching, goal setting, feedback, and relationship building to improve performance and support associate development.
  • Monitor succession planning and ensure associates have active development plans.
  • Ensure associates follow safety and hazardous-material procedures and complete applicable safety training.
  • Use personal protective equipment, guide associates in its proper use, and educate them on proper lifting techniques and lift-equipment safety distances.
  • Correct unsafe conditions immediately and ensure aisles and walking surfaces are safe.
  • Verify completion of safety checklists, issue corrections, and preventive actions.
  • Maintain department profitability through analysis, trend identification, and response to identified problems.
  • Communicate company objectives, motivate associates to achieve goals, and create game plans for sales, service, and profitability improvements.
  • Review game-plan tasks, event execution, projects, and company priorities, including upcoming projects, resets, and operational activities.
  • Leverage sales and profit opportunities through shrink management, safety and environmental compliance, profit-and-loss management, and markdown controls.
  • Guide Department Supervisors in tracking department performance and making decisions to maximize sales.
  • Identify and build relationships with the store’s best professional and do-it-yourself customers.
  • Perform opening, closing, and Manager-on-Duty activities and other whole-store responsibilities.
  • Lead store kickoff meetings, walk each department for store readiness, and communicate messages, priorities, and tasks to associates.
  • Conduct handoff walks with the prior Manager on Duty and identify areas requiring focus or follow-up.
  • Ensure ZMA, RTV, and on-hand approvals are completed.
  • Connect customer-service escalations to the appropriate associate and ensure resolution.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing, address staffing opportunities and call-outs, and monitor attendance variances.
  • Maintain merchandising, organization, displays, and store events in accordance with store standards.
  • Review merchandise presentation, signage, and pricing daily, and ensure the store is uncluttered and organized.

Major US retailers have received over $5 billion in tariff refunds this week alone, with Walmart getting $2.9 billion, Target $994 million, and Home Depot $730 million. The Trump administration is refunding approximately $166 billion in tariff revenue after the Supreme Court struck down its sweeping tariff policy, having returned $100 billion so far. Despite studies showing consumers bore the brunt of initial tariff costs through higher prices, most companies are reinvesting the refunds rather than passing savings to shoppers. Retail executives indicated in earnings calls they plan to put the money back into their businesses. Consumers have filed class-action lawsuits against companies receiving refunds, but none have concluded. Americans have limited recourse to recover funds if companies don't voluntarily lower prices.

Home Depot's Temco Logistics lays off 223 workers across three US states

Home Express Delivery Service, operating as Temco Logistics, is laying off 71 workers in Dallas as it closes its flatbed delivery centre in the Mountain Creek neighbourhood. The facility at 9222 W. Jefferson Blvd. will shut down, with affected employees being separated from employment beginning 26 September. Temco Logistics, a delivery and logistics company providing last-mile and white-glove delivery services for appliances and furniture, was acquired by The Home Depot in 2023. The company has filed similar notices in Florida and Georgia, where it is also closing flatbed delivery centres, resulting in a total of 223 job losses across three states.

Home Depot and Lowe's revenue trends reveal market dominance and valuation shifts

Morgan Stanley sees $420 upside in Home Depot amid housing market freeze

Morgan Stanley has maintained its overweight rating and $420 price target on Home Depot following the company's first-quarter fiscal 2026 results, calling it "a turnkey stock without the turn". The firm views the stock's current discount as an opportunity, despite Home Depot trading down 9.14% year to date.
