PAY

Pay Range:  612

Starting Salary:  $79,448.40 annually 

Salary dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

JOB SUMMARY

This is a special assignment position embedded in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Oklahoma for the purpose of federally prosecuting gun related violent crimes occurring within the corporate limits of The City of Oklahoma City. This position falls within the Criminal Justice Division of the Office of the Municipal Counselor and reports to the Criminal Justice Division Head.  This position may be funded by public safety sales tax revenue or grant funds awarded to the Oklahoma City Police Department. If this position becomes grant funded, the parameters of the prosecutorial focus will be adjusted to meet grant requirements. 

The goal of The City of Oklahoma City through this project is to make our community safer for victims of domestic violence by interrupting the escalation of violence through enforcement of appropriate firearms laws. This position will serve in a direct liaison role between the Oklahoma City Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, evaluating cases involving firearms for potential federal prosecution, and preparing and presenting firearms cases for federal prosecution. 

Job Description: The successful applicant will be able to work equally well individually and in a team setting and will possess the judgment, skill, and fearlessness necessary to succeed as part of a fast-paced and aggressive prosecution team. The selected SAUSA will evaluate potential cases for prosecution based on the Oklahoma City Police Department’s priorities of addressing gang violence, violent offenders possessing firearms, and domestic abusers who use firearms in their crimes, under the guidance and supervision of the USAO. 

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least one (1) year post-J.D. legal experience. 

Qualified applicants must be a United States Citizen or National. 

Preferred Qualifications: An ideal applicant will have strong research and writing skills and trial experience. Applicants will be expected to be self-sufficient, with an ability to prepare relevant pleadings as well as frequently appear in court. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills, including experiences with e-discovery and e-litigation platforms, electronic court filing, email, and word processing systems. 

You must meet all qualification requirements upon selection for the appointment. 

Suitability and Citizenship: It is the policy of the United States Department of Justice to achieve a drug-free workplace and persons selected for appointment will be required to pass a drug test which screens for illegal drug use. 

Employment: Initial employment with the Office of the Municipal Counselor is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory adjudication of a background investigation and appointment as a SAUSA with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Oklahoma. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance and source of funding. 

All employees of the Office of the Municipal Counselor are at-will and service is at the discretion of the Municipal Counselor. 

 JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice law in the State of Oklahoma. 
• Knowledge of and skill in the application of federal, state and City laws and ordinances.
• Skill in written and verbal communication.
• Skill in critically assessing and organizing a wide variety of information.
• Skill in making oral presentations.
• Skill in legal research software platforms, such as Westlaw.
• Skill in drafting and revising legal and/or other documents on a word processor preferred.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective, productive, and congenial working relationships with officials, employees, outside agencies, and individuals.

VETERANS PREFERENCE

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Primarily inside in climate-controlled environment in office and court buildings.
• Appearances and hearings in state and/or federal court as necessary.
• Subject to occasional local or out-of-town travel to attend meetings, conferences, seminars, etc.
• Routinely required to work hours beyond normal scheduled work hours.

Note:  Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Adequate near vision enough to read and draft various types of written and machine generated communications.
• Hearing and speech enough to communicate clearly and effectively in person and by telephone.
• Manual and finger dexterity enough to operate standard office equipment such as computer, ten-key, copier, fax, etc.

Pay Method:  City employees are required to receive pay electronically, either via direct deposit or pay card.
