An Information Technologist (IT) utilizes knowledge and clinical laboratory experience to manage laboratory data and information. The IT assists all laboratory areas in the delivery of quality laboratory products and services with primary focus on the preanalytical and post analytical phases of laboratory services while functioning as the primary advocate for the customer. This position requires general knowledge of testing performed in all laboratory areas and the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility with minimal supervision by the director or manager. Other critical aspects include excellent communication and customer service skills and the ability to quickly resolve customer issues or problems.
The Laboratory Information Technologist (LIT) receives specimens and verifies identification on these specimens, verifies information on the written request, transfers this information into the computer system and sends the specimen to the appropriate testing area(s). The LIT retrieves laboratory data and reports and assists authorized personnel, while maintaining patient confidentiality. This individual is also responsible for keeping the surrounding area clean and organized.
Job Duties:
- Utilizes computer systems to perform inquiries, order tests, transcribe results, generate billing, worksheets, and reports as assigned according to standard laboratory practices.
- Communicates effectively with nursing staff, physicians and other hospital departments.
- Demonstrates basic-keyboarding skills needed for a highly computerized laboratory environment.
- Consults supervising technologist or laboratory services directory for assistance when necessary.
- Verifies that patient demographic information on specimen corresponds to that on the test order requisition.
- Verifies specimen acceptability according to laboratory procedures. Follows appropriate laboratory protocols for unacceptable specimens.
- Identifies specimens to be shared with other laboratory departments and follows appropriate interdepartmental procedures for shared specimens.
- Accessions test requests into the Laboratory Information System.
- Assists in maintaining, ordering and restocking supplies.
- Contacts health care provider/customer to clarify unclear requests.
- Packages specimens for transport according to IATA guidelines and established laboratory protocols
Experience and Education Requirements:
- BS from an accredited college or university.
- Degree in science, computer science or business preferred.
