Responsibilities
  • Provide overall leadership of the Department of Surgery, including divisions and sections, with responsibility for strategic execution, clinical services, professional performance, business performance, medical education, scholarship, and physician practice.
  • Promote an environment that facilitates job satisfaction and well-being among physicians by ensuring lines of communication are well established and by seeking input from key stakeholders in strategic planning.
  • Establish and evaluate performance expectations of all divisions and sections to ensure highest quality patient care and consistency in clinical care standards driven by patient safety requirements, regulatory requirements, and clinical outcomes monitoring.
  • Lead multidisciplinary programs to ensure efficiency and equity of care and champion efforts to enhance the patient experience.
  • Participate in business development activities to expand existing and develop new clinical programs, recruit and build the necessary workforce, and set policies and protocols to achieve a higher-volume, technically sophisticated and efficient department.
  • Collaborate in the development of the strategic plan, implement the annual operating plan, and select initiatives and projects to drive safety, growth, service, quality, and cost objectives.
  • Serve as a de facto chief education officer by working with residency and fellowship program directors to ensure an optimal learning environment for medical students, residents, staff physicians, and other health care providers; champion scholarly achievement and clinical research; seek collaboration with ongoing research initiatives; provide fiduciary oversight of the general surgery residency, dental residency, and bariatric fellowship.
  • Attend and, when appropriate, lead education conferences for faculty, residents, and students; ensure excellent clinical education and advanced training for learners across service lines.
  • Align employed and community-based physicians within the department and act as a visible champion of change initiatives to continue to improve performance.
  • Provide leadership of Department functions and responsibility for strategic execution, clinical services, professional performance, business performance, medical education, clinical research, and physician practice; establish a vision for the Department focusing on increasing referrals and developing innovative clinical programs.
  • Lead the department to achieve the highest level of academic performance in training medical students and residents and develop stronger commitment to departmental research efforts.
  • Maintain active patient practice as part of the chair role, ideally involving hospital-based and ambulatory care.
  • Unify department operations to enhance patient access and deliver high-quality services to the community.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff.
